I suspect they are doing their very best to do so, but with limited resources and increasing population.

Just seen on the news that the evil father of little Sara, got attacked in jail by two other prisoners last night.
They are supposed to have used the sharp tin lid of a Tuna can, and cut him up pretty bad apparently.

It was only a matter of time, surely.

I still maintain that murder, proven beyond any doubt, should be punished by hanging.
Not only would it free up prison spaces, it would act as a severe deterrent.
But no. The do-gooders wouldn't like it. 🙄

Not quite sure about hanging, but a lethal injection, similar to they use on our animals, could be used for the worst criminals.
As you say, I agree it would be a deterrent, and also free up prison spaces + save money on food and care for years.
