Inspiring Pictures: Gleaming Notre Dame to Reopen for Christmas Over Five Years After Devastating Fire

French President Emmanuel Macron hailed the "sublime" rebuild of the magnificent 12th-century gothic Notre Dame de Paris cathedral as he toured it before reopening on Friday.

Notre Dame de Paris will reopen on December 7th, in time for Christmas, some five years and eight months after it was tragically gutted by fire, burning out the roof and bringing down its magnificent timber and lead spire. French President Emmanuel Macron, who has somewhat tied himself politically to the rebuild — having promised to have it done in five years shortly after the blaze — made a final site visit to the church on Friday and met with some of the workers who had repaired the building.

I have no religion but do think these heritage sites must be preserved. It seems they didn't go with the horrendous modernistic things they were discussing for the renovation just after the fire.

I do fear that this may be a target for the usual suspects though and hope there is some good and unobtrusive security in place.

We still don't know the truth about the fire in Notre Dame, in view of the amount of churches that 'catch' fire in France, it's possible this wasn't accidental.

They managed to put in down to careless builders so no investigation needed. Bit like all those Russians being careless with their fag ends so burning out military facilities rather than there being any that disagree with the policies of Herr Putin and setting light to them. Accidents are so much easier to cope with.

I wonder how they restored the statues  and stonework to whiteness ?

Last night I watched part of a documntary on Notre Dame and obviously for the French Notre Dame is more than a church, it's part of their history.
The persons responsible for the rebuilding said that it was "hard work" and luckily the base plates for the spire hadn't been damaged by the fire.
However, what stunned me particularly when I saw the pictures of today's Notre Dame on TV is, how bright it looks now that all the dust has been removed from the walls and the candle soot from the windows. Some years ago when I visited Chartres some of the windows had aleady been cleaned and others not - there was an enormous difference between both.

I can appreciate the feelings of the Parisians after this fire.  Sadly, such things are not at all unusual.
In 1829 our nearest great cathedral, York Minster, was damaged by a fire started by a madman, Jonathan Martin.  There was a lot of damage especially in the choir (chancel) and the ancient organ was completely destroyed.  A replacement was built in 1832.
Jonathan Martin was sent to a lunatic asylum.  No easy punishments in those days!

They should get shot of that damned notre thingy and use the site for a Mosque with attached multi-storey carpark.

I don't doubt that a few decades from now they will have if things continue as they are.

The magnificent Mosque in Cordoba Spain is a cross between a mosque and a Cathedral .

However, I was sort of shocked when I saw the "Christian part" of the mosque at Cordoba. On the other side the guide told us that this was a blessing for the mosque as otherwise it would have been torn down like many other mosques in Spain.

I wonder how many of our churches will survive as such, or be converted into mosques or carpet warehouses!

Considering the reduction of numbers who are active Church of England followers (and the latest Archbishop of Canterbury has upset a lot of his 'flock'!), I'd suggest that the Roman Catholic church could consider taking responsibility for our great cathedrals.

You'd have though Jehova could have had a word with Thor and the rest of the gang who look after the weather to go easy on them.

Could I be arrested for suggesting/asking that holy buildings used for certain religions be smote down directly by the god(s) without humans being involved, thus leaving intact the actual "true" faiths?

klondike

Ah the true faiths. We need a competition to sort them out. Last time Woden and Zeus couldn't agree they settled it by arm wrestling. Perhaps Welby and the Pope should have a contest.

Give it time.  Things will sort themselves out by the people, as there really are no gods.

In the not too distant future there will be only one true faith in Britain.
