Quote from: klondike on December 01, 2024, 10:29:03 AMThere use to be a German market held here each year but hasn't been recently. I expect the council overpriced it. They should be paying the stallholders to come, It draws people into the town and livens the place up a bit.

Instead they make parking expensive, navigating anywhere by car near the centre almost impossible, charge the shops a fortune in rates and are pretty lax with litter picking.  Result closed shops. Most people in town seem to be homeless winos or junkies.

They closed the huge market square down and spent a fortune revamping it. Trouble was it took a year and they didn't provide the stall holders with a viable alternate location. Result they all moved elsewhere or just gave up. Now that new square with a few permanent wooden boxes for shops is pretty much deserted. Well done Northampton council.

So the old traders never went back when the square re-opened then?   That's a shame.

I understand Wellingborough market has got problems too.  See this:

Due to anti-social behaviour (ASB) on the Market Square in Wellingborough, North Northamptonshire Council will start work next week to remove the fixed market stalls.

This is following work undertaken with partners and a recommendation from Northamptonshire Police, who highlighted ASB as part of their environmental audit of Wellingborough.

The market will continue to run as normal after the works have been completed with space available to hire through the council's market team, with gazebos and tables available.

Works taking place include the removal of the fixed stalls, installation of drop-down bollards, removal of large photo boards (which will be relocated) and once the area is clear, repair work will be completed to repair any trip hazards.

I've no idea what's been going on, as I don't often go to Wellingborough anymore.

We close our Main Street in Reigate and have a late night shopping.. It is from 6pm TIL 9pm.. The stalls line the street and local traders sell their stuff..
A hot dog and burger stall..
Parking is difficult and all the side streets are full of cars..
Most shops offer customers mulled wine..
Me and my mate did it one year.. We had a few drinks..
And I bought some wonderful cow bells hanging from a piece of rope.. They are still hanging in my hall..
Such a pretty sound when touched..
And we have an ice rink in the park..
Don't ask me.. I know nuffink..

In Germany Santa Claus is celebrated on December 6, and the children have to polish their boots and put them in front of their door to be filled.
In kindergardens usually Santa Claus visits the children asking them whether they had been behaving good or not and handing over to them small gifts.
On Christmas the Christkind is putting the gifts under the decorated Christmas tree.

Although I loved the build up to Christmas in Germany, I always came home for Christmas and New Year

I had a trip to another Christmas Market today across in Liverpool, it was very festive but I still can't believe we paid £16 for two Bratwurst - more fool me !
