Ashy

We never have scones so it doesn't make any difference to us.

Next argument...

Cream first or jam first?

Jam first.  Have you ever tried spreading jam on top of cream?

Oik.  One doesn't spread jam in a scone.

In?  I cut them in half, spread a thin layer of jam on each cut face, then cream on top of the jam.
Doesn't everyone?
If you were to FILL a scone with jam, cream or whatever, when you come to take a bite the contents will squeeze out and go all over the place!

Me too.  And Harrogate? I wish.  South Yorks, mining and steelworks, and defo not posh.

Not much in the way of steelworks now, and mining went years ago.
You're on a similar latitude to us, and the beautiful Peak District in between and just on our doorsteps.
And yes, Harrogate is out of our league too, I'm afraid.

You'd never get a 'squishy scone' at Betty's in Harrogate. Many a court room plot hatched in there I remember. A local Solicitor's favourite ploy was to extract 2 cream teas from my 'purse' for 'himself' and  a clerk who never seemed to arrive so 'Harold' had to demolish them all to himself!

I love Betty's! Pot of tea and a fat rascal.  🫖☕️   Daughter, granddaughter and I had lunch in the one in York not so long ago.

Had a lovely time at the one in Harrogate several years back.  Didn't even have to queue, but when we left there was already a long line of people along the pavement waiting.

Then we went to the Good Food show and saw James Martin cook on stage.

We've lived in Doncaster through the miners' strike, then Rotherham before ending up in Sheffield, all have evidence still if those industries.  We're fairly near to the Peak District, as you say beautiful.   We're familiar with the route via Chatsworth, Baslow, Buxton towards Macclesfield, as our son, like you, migrated to Cheshire.  It was dodgy coming home last week, we had to navigate a couple of floods.

Marge and I were brought up in Bradford (actually Marge is a Kraut), which was reasonably nice during my childhood, but desperate now.
Yes, we often drive out of the built-up area and into the Peak District.  Have you ever been to Eyam, where the occupants secluded themselves during the plague years, and also LIttle John's Grave?

Yes, but its a few years ago since we went. Ladybower, Ashford in the Water, Longshaw and Castleton are nice too.  Too many nice spots to mention.
