Because American retailers needed a polite way of describing a financial mess.

The term originally had nothing to do with shopping. In the 1950s–60s, police in Philadelphia called the day after Thanksgiving "Black Friday" because the city was clogged with traffic, crowds, and shoplifting. It was a headache, not a celebration.

Retailers hated the negative association, so in the 1980s they pushed a new explanation: that it was the day their accounts went "into the black" (profit) instead of "in the red." That story stuck because it sounded positive and business-friendly.

So the real origin is chaos and misery for police, later rebranded as a feel-good marketing line.

Nope, but we got the letters ages ago.  OH has missed the extra £100 for being over 80 cut off by a few days.  🙄
