Perhaps they like a cool breeze around the old wedding tackle?

Postmen around here always wear shorts,

What if they get frost-bite instead of healthy breeze?

Quote from: Mups on January 13, 2025, 02:16:07 PMIt's a balmy 5°  here this morning.  I very nearly went up the Co-op in my shorts.

Talking of which,  a couple of days ago when it was several degrees below zero all the time, I saw a couple walking their dog nearby,  and the man had a thick, warm coat, on,  woolly bobble hat . . . .  and shorts!

Why do men do this?  It IS only men too.
I have never, ever seen a woman out in shorts in mid-winter,  have you?
There was an oldish guy dressed like that who passed me this morning.  Hat, scarf, gloves, proper thick jacket, and shorts!   What a wally.  He was with a woman, also warmly dressed but with trousers on.
Its not how old you are, but how you are old. 💖

I went clay shooting on Saturday (fool that I am) Long johns, jeans and thermal overtrousers. Four layers under a skeet vest on top. Toasty.

Seems the poor dumped Lynx were starving, and obviously didn't know how to hunt.

I suppose if they had been in captivity all their lives, they would never been allowed to hunt or do anything that would naturally do.   Maybe they got used to having their food provided.

But also, don't forget the amount of snow up there,  so that could have covered the scent of other prey.  There perhaps wouldn't have been a lot of creatures around anyway, in such bad weather.
I would have thought if they were really hungry and they saw a chance of food,  instinct would have taken over,  so perhaps that one was ill anyway?

klondike

I may be wrong but I think most wild predators get taught the ropes by their parents. In captivity there is no need to hunt so although there is some instinct there the fine points of the skills won't be.

It would be the same with prey animals. Brer rabbit may out fox brer fox but fluffy bunnikins is going to be a meal at the first encounter.

Anyway they are safe now and being looked after properly, It's a shame one of them died though. I've been hearing rumors that they are to come back up here to The Highland Wildlife Park once they're fit and healthy.

Oh Joy, My son is at my house down in Perth and he's sent me this photo of a bloody big Wind Pylon over from my house, on the hill. Just what I want overlooking the place.

Do any of you have one (or more) near you?

Mups

Oh No.  How awful.  Damn great thing like that stuck right outside your windows -  no thanks.

Does it make any noise, do you know?   I have heard,  can't remember where,  that the ground faintly shudders under foot, but I don't know if that's true or not?

Were residents even consulted, do you know?   Poor you.

Raven

Not that I know of, I spend most of my time up north so had no idea this was being installed. It looks like it's installed in the grounds of the Golf Club, but I don't know for sure. I won't be going down to Perth for a few weeks yet but Dave says he'll keep an eye on it, and speak to my pal Cath if he sees her, find out what's going on. He says there was nothing in the mail about it so I don't know.

Thats horrible for you Raven.  Reminds me of the sleeve of the the War of the Worlds LP

Raven,  I looked this up about the distance they have to be from properties, and found this:

How far should wind turbines be from houses?

Larger wind turbines up to 100 metres high should be at least a mile away, and the largest—those above 100 metres—should be at least one and a half miles from any home.

klondike

Looking at that one. I don't think it's a monster judging by the ratio of the blades to the turbine. I still wouldn't want it near me as from what I've heard they are all noisy as well as being a bit of an eyesore.
