A burst water pipe down in Clapham,  South  London,  caused a big sink hole to open up.
It must be pretty  scary  if that happens outside your house!

A massive sinkhole has opened up on Kings Avenue, near Clapham Common, with a burst pipe leading to major flooding and travel chaos

If water was dangerous, like gas, the pipes would be kept in much better order! (Ex gas board employee here!)
Its not how old you are, but how you are old. 💖

It's dangerous. Eating away the subsoil like that can cause fatal accidents I'm sure. I'll ask my chatty mate

Turns out water is dangerous. Let's hope this leak has only damaged the road.

What if it happened in someone's front garden, or under their kitchen floor?

I realise the water board are responsible for mending the damaged pipes,  but do they also have to pay for the damage and re-decorating of someone's house,  or would that be down to house insurance?

And what about if you were out mowing your lawn when this hole opened up, and you disappeared down the hole?    Is there compensation for that sort of thing?

The water companies have  stocks of complimentary headstones for dishing out under those circumstances.

I'd like to think if you had buildings insurance, they would pay out so you could get repairs done, then they could claim against the water board. This could be very serious though. A couple years ago we experienced a loss of pressure which Thames Water said was due to a leak. Photographs of the vicinity of the leak, which was three or four miles away from our street, showed an enormous new lake which the water main was filling.
