don't know how I did it, but plugging a USB hub into the Acer, I accidently leant on the keyboard and now whenever I open a folder the screen is divided vertically and on the right hand side it asks me which file I wish to preview - the answer in none, but no matter what I do can't get rid of it. I've found several 'solutions' via Goggle, but none of them work - I can't even find a way to reduce the amount of teh screen the wretched thin takes

 Start>>Settings>>System.  Click on Multitasking.

In the right pane, under Snap Windows, change to Off    My snap windows is on, so it's probably nothing to do with your problem

followed your steps - snap was on, and I changed it to off but the select screen is still there. Tried restarting but made no difference.

T'was just a guess Mike, we've got Klondy and one of the other members who are great with computers so they'll be able to help no doubt :upvote:

Michael Rolls

it's not really a problem, just a bit of a nuisance - but the real puzzle is how I came to achieve it!

I don't know what is meant from the description. A screen dump would help. All I'll do is look it up on google anyway as I'm not a whizz with all the stupid "helpful" new features Microsoft keep adding and my time gets spent finding out how to reverse them.

Had a look at file explorer - my guess is that you clicked  "Details" (top right). Click it again and I think what you are seeing will go away.

Back in the day there was a story about a faulty keypunch that kept going wrong by inserting spaces until an engineer spotted the cause of the problem.

don't have a details key - anyway, thanks everyone - I can work round the problem - just a puzz;e

Can you click on Print Screen Mike ?

klondike

Looked again. It will be the Preview pane turned on via the View menu.

You can either turn it off again via the View menu or by just clicking on Preview which is top right

My screen (it's the other machine, not this one, looks quite different to your screen shot. The is a vertical line splitting the screen in two and no Preview button. However, I can work around it and it's a nuisance, not a problem.
Can't do a print screen because it is the other machine, but thanks for all the advice folks.

I've done it! Or rather - you have mate - it's just that the relevant button was lurking in a totally different place from your machine - it was hidden in something called 'Navigation' Thanks to one and all
