Same here.

Where I live we have a green bin for recycling,  black for rubbish, brown for garden waste, + a little green box thing for food waste.

The recycling one takes plastics,  glass, paper (+ shredded paper), cardboard and all that sort of thing.

Recycling here is black but with a blue lid, dark grey/black is landfill and brown is garden stuff but they charge extra for that and I don't produce much having no lawn so it gets hidden away at the bottom of the black bin in a bag.

As to milk cartons mine go along with the cap into recycling. As the EU (so our lot followed naturally) are so keen on inconveniently making sure caps are attached I assume the recycling plants can handle them as a single unit. There is some sort of plastic or foil liners in them anyway. I can just as easily put them in landfill if that doesn't suit.

Forgot that. I don't have room under my sink for much as the dishwasher is under the drainer do I don't use it.

Interesting that there is no nationally agreed system of refuse bins.
We have:

Black bin (the smallest) for general waste
Blue bin for paper and card
Brown bin for cans, bottles and other such containers
Green bin - twice as big as the others - for food waste, in our case always one small plastic bag hiding at the bottom.

This green bin used to take garden rubbish, but no longer permitted.  It doesn't matter to us as we compost all our garden waste.

In Birmingham where the bin man are still on strike everything goes into a black bag and left on the side of the road, no problem

Do the rats eat all of it including the tin cans?

We used to have a complicated system of boxes. I think there were about 6 or 7 in total. All the recycling in one bin is a lot more convenient. If they went back to something complicated I think all mine would accidentally go in the landfill bin.

We've got 4 separate wheelie bins !  bloody nuisance 'parking' them up    Red wheelie for glass, tins and plastic.  Blue wheelie for paper & cardboard, Black wheelie for anything not recyclable and Green wheelie for grass cuttings.  I still don't know whether Tetra Pak is Red or Blue, there's nothing on council recycling site, so I'll just dump it in the black bin

It is interesting that a lot of people have a black bin for general rubbish.  I am assuming that should one of the other bins (our blue bin - paper/card) is completely full now and I have thought about dumping a big pile of paper (I have been emptying some folders from when I was teaching) into the black bin for that reason.

I'm not sure whether 'general rubbish' can include stuff that should go in any of the other three bins.
I suppose I could wait until the blue bin is emptied next week (I think).

Lot of terrace houses here with no front garden and no easy rear entrance. They get issued with bags instead. If they didn't the pavements would be unpassable for bins.
