I know exactly how you feel.  When our last cat was on his last legs and we took him to the vet to be put down humanely, I cried as we left through the waiting room.  I haven't cried again since, but I'm sure I'll feel the same when either of our two cats die.
Strangely, it's an upset which hasn't happened when either of my parents died.  Perhaps it's because pets are like children, relying on us to help them.

You are probably correct most of the time.  However, our last cat was lying in his basket when we took him to the vet and, now I think about it, he wasn't complaining or making any worrying sounds.  The vet explained that he was dying and, now I think about it, I wonder whether he might have died peacefully at home rather than the vet putting him down.

I have always said how strange the law is at times.

Doctors would be struck off and in b-i-g  trouble if they gave a lethal injection to a patient.
Yet Vets would be struck if they didn't   do it, and let an animal suffer a long and painful death instead.
