Quote from: Ashy on April 13, 2025, 12:15:03 PMWe don't expect these things in the 21st century do we? And yet here we are, apparently the whole mechanical gubbins broke apart with out warning. Once the tail breaks in a helicopter you have almost no chance.
The thing about helicopters is that it only takes a small fault like maybe a cracked bolt to start a failure and once something starts to fail with either rotor that usually spells disaster. An airliner can have engines fail and even drop off and still land safely. I remember seeing a bit of video of one where half the roof had somehow ripped off and that landed OK although not necessarily with as many onboard as it had set out with.

Getting back to the helicopter, I'm surprised that there doesn't appear to be any other damage/injury due to shrapnel.  After all, a blade snapping off would surely travel a fair old way, especially as it'll have started from height.
