How things have changed

Just seen a programme on the telly.
It seems that in 1940 we had the largest Royal Navy in the world, even larger than the US.

Now, we are the proud possessors of 25 warships and 40 admirals!
Nearly two admirals for every warship!

That probably won't mean much to most people, but I think it reflects how the country has changed.

Things have definitely got worse since then, but of course we can't afford to do everything we supposedly have to do.
For example, we can't afford to provide homes (or hotels) for every third-world person who arrives on our doorstep, now many thousands if not millions, and at the same time provide armed forces for our own protection.
We may as well give the whole country away.
On the positive side, however, I very much doubt that Russia or any other enemy would even want to take control of our country now.  Consequently, I suppose we don't really need to pay for our own protection.

I think the army is similar, having ten horses for every battle tank.

I agree.  Each of our three services are clearly undermanned, undervalued and under-supplied.
Even were more funds (and government support) to materialised, our infamous Generation-Z seem disinterested in joining up and, for that matter, even bothering to work for a living.

Unless serious changes are made from the top, the country has had it.  Personally, I can survive, but I don't have children to support.  I sometimes look at what is happening and imagine worrying consequences.
