I bet there would soon be uproar if a white actor played someone like Ghandi, or Muhammid Ali.

Diversity doesn't seem to work that way. The only diversion from historical accuracy is removing the white straight characteristics from the characters being played. It would probably be fine to have him played by a black lesbian too though I imagine. Preferably with Mary being a transexual bloke with Joseph as his equally gay adoptive father from a female God.

I generally have no problem with Jesus not being portrayed as white and blue eyed, he was Middle Eastern.  But as a woman?
