I blew up the engine on an automatic Ford Granada while driving it up on to a ramp.  Brand new car too !

I ripped the vinyl roof off a company one on an autobahn when the passenger fiddled with the sunroof. That was an automatic.

I'd imagine that having learnt in and driven a normal car for some time, it'd be nigh on impossible to completely forget the knee-jerk muscle memory reaction to certain events, such as an imminent prang.  One is most likely going to smack the clutch and brake in a fraction of a second without hesitation.

I believe that the correct procedure is the brake first and the clutch second.

My gammy left arm can't really cope with a manual any more

Solution... buy a left hand drive car.  You'd be able to use your right arm to change gears then, even though you'd be unable to steer with your gammy left one while doing so.

Swings and roundabouts.  You'd crash into both😬
