I've been getting updates from a friend who lives in Tampa, Phil lives right on the lake front. So far he's not for leaving but the police are giving him a hard time so he might yet, I certainly hope he does.
Watching it on the News and already it looks awful. This one looks a real horror. So glad I live in cold old Scotland.

Damn! I do feel for them, just recovering from the last hurricane and another arrives.
Something that always strikes me as strange is that there never seems to be any help offered to the US when there is a disaster like this. No charity's asking for money, no offers of military aid, no blankets food, medical or tents being sent.
Is there a reason for that? Anyone know?

The Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act is a 1988 United States federal law designed to bring an orderly and systematic means of federal natural disaster assistance for state and local governments in carrying out their responsibilities to aid citizens.

Under the FEMA scheme, (Federal Emergency Management Agency) compensation is granted as described below;

There are two types of disaster declarations provided for in the Stafford Act: Emergency declarations and major disaster declarations. The type of declaration affects what types of assistance may be available.

The President can declare a major disaster for any event that has caused damage beyond the combined response capabilities of state and local governments.

A major disaster declaration provides a wide range of federal assistance programs for individuals and public infrastructure, including funds for both emergency and permanent work.

The President can declare an emergency for any occasion or instance when federal assistance is needed to supplement emergency services provided by state and local or Indian tribal governments. These services include the protection of lives, property, public health, safety, or to lessen or avert the threat of a catastrophe.

Different disaster assistance programs are available for individual citizens and public groups, such as government agencies and private nonprofit organizations.

If you are affected by a disaster and live in an area designated for Individual Assistance under a major disaster declaration, you can apply for Individual Assistance for support during the immediate response of an incident and afterward in the recovery process.

There are many types of assistance programs available to help survivors after a disaster for needs like emergency sheltering, home repairs and hazard mitigation.

I saw the news this morning and I was surprised to learn that the people have to fend for themselves.. Most hotels are full and people just don't have anywhere to go..
They have pets that they can't leave behind .. disabled people.. And many who can not afford to move elsewhere..
Don't ask me.. I know nuffink..

Who in their right mind goes to Florida on holiday in the hurricane season?
The problem with being retired is that you never get a day off

Thanks for that but my point was about the lack of help from other nations.

ansu

As far as I know they didn't ask any other country for help.
However, what I can't understand is that there are still such a lot of Americans denying the change in climate.

Maybe it's because the worst recorded US hurricane was in 1900.
