Had a couple of entertaining days. Wednesday's weather was so appalling that I cancelled my remedial massage appointment – rain so heavy that visibility was under 100 yards, and the gale so strong it brough down the large tree on the opposite side of the lane. Thankfully, it fell back into the field, although a good few feet encroached into the lane, leaving just enough room clear for vehicles to edge past. Alex, my farmer neighbour, used his tractor to drag the tree further into the field so the lane was clear - things could have been very dangerous had the tree still been there in the dark. Had the tree fallen the other way it would have demolished much of our fence and damaged our roof. So far, so entertaining.
Then at 1130 we lost power. We assumed that it was down to the storm, but no. After a while we realised that only the house was affected. The garage still had power as did other houses – so chase up the emergency service. Engineers got to us around 2045 and said it was a supply problem. They made a temporary fix, so power was restored, but a permanent modification is needed. Given all the emergency work with which they are having to cope, no idea when that will happen.
We spent Thursday recovering! Also looking out some of the readings, etc., to recommend for Victoria's funeral.
In the words of Samuel Pepys – and so to bed!
Thank you for the days, the days you gave me

We were lucky.  Just a couple of lamps flickering for a few seconds.  Then the wind ripping apart our garden swing cover.

I think we were lucky, looking at what happened just a few miles over to the east.

If it hadn't been for the news we wouldn't have known there'd been any bad weather.

Where will Victoria's funeral be?

Maidstone Cemetery 15/1/24 at 1100. It will be live streamed so I will be able to watch it - the journey is just too much for me nowadays, sadly - but at least I will be there in spirit with them

Live streaming of funerals is one of the big advantages brought by the internet & I know what you mean about the journey.

I will be thinking about all of you.

Were they all living in the UK when Victoria died?

thanks, Phil. All our side - the very few left, are/were in the UK. Miguel is Spanish and has a large family over there, so, as I told him, it was a very good idea for he and Katie to spend Christmas surrounded by family.

That was a good & very thoughtful suggestion Mike.

I suppose Miguel & Katie could relocate to Spain at some point in the future.

It's one thing for those of us at our age wanting to remain in familiar surroundings but not necessarily so for a 13-yr-old.

I do wonder - and I wouldn't blame Miguel if he decided to do that. All his blood relatives are in Spain (not counting Katie) - he has two brother and and a sister, all with spouses and children, and his parents are still alive (both a bit younger than me). Here in the UK he has myself. His step father-in law, Mary, Victoria's aunt, and Desmond, Victoria's uncle - and that's it. Katie was born in Spain, but they came to the UK when she was only 10 months old - but they have had frequent holidays there over the years. Under Spanish law she has dual nationality but when she gets to be 18 she has to chose one or the other
