Nicola Sturgeon's husband Peter Murrell, 58, arrested in SNP funding investigation

Mr Murrell, the former SNP chief executive, was arrested earlier today in connection with an investigation into the funding and finances of the Scottish National Party.

Nicola Sturgeon's husband, Peter Murrell, has been arrested in connection with an investigation into the funding and finances of the Scottish National Party, Police Scotland said.

In a statement, Police Scotland said: "A 58-year-old man has today, Wednesday, 5 April 2023, been arrested as a suspect in connection with the ongoing investigation into the funding and finances of the Scottish National Party.

"The man is in custody and is being questioned by Police Scotland detectives.

"Officers are also carrying out searches at a number of addresses as part of the investigation.

"A report will be sent to the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service."

It added: "As the investigation is ongoing we are unable to comment further."
Ms Sturgeon resigned in February and was replaced by SNP politician Humza Yousaf.

Mr Murrell - who had been chief executive since 2000 - also stepped down earlier this year for unrelated reasons.

He said he had planned to step down after the SNP leadership contest had concluded but was doing so earlier than planned because his "future has become a distraction from the campaign".

Alex

Now we're finding out why St. Nichola resigned maybe  ? :busted:

Raven

Naw, I don't think so. Anyway just because himself has been arrested doesn't mean he's actually guilty. The last thing those two need is money, not with what they earned between them.

Alex

Apparently there's a police forensics tent outside Sturgeon's home, hard to believe she didn't know what her hubby was up to - if he was of course

I really hope he didn't do anything wrong, and is just being the scapegoat. But only time will tell.  :worried:

When I go to the Mail I see they are running the same story

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11941197/Police-probing-Scottish-National-Party-funding-arrest-man-58.html

There is more detail in there but as they are avoiding libel charges it is all rather opaque. £600,000 is mentioned as being "diverted" but whether that is internal cost account diversions within the SNP or into private bank accounts is by no means clear.

Regardless of detail and outcome it is still bad news for the party IMO.
