I'm a little baffled.

At the bottom of a thread where you can subscribe for Notification (emails) and Alerts (forum based) ... could you explain how  the  ...@mention works please?

Anyone know how it works?

Alex

I'd never noticed it

:worried: It's me ... I'm terrible for rummaging and trying to figure things out.

The site uses a free email service which limits numbers of mails so notification emails and most others are turned off to ensure that the limit isn't breached which would be a problem should anybody register or somebody forget their password and need a reset email.

I have no idea what @mentions are. I'll see if I can find out.

It looks like you may be able to mention users in posts. Not sure what it will do here. No email I hope but maybe an alert. I'll try it on my alterego @Mark to see what happens.

Nothing with @Mark which is an alias I'll try the actual user @digitalham and @morty for good measure

So far as I can see the answer is nothing.

Checking further it's an optional feature which I never enabled. As there is a PM option it seems to me to be superfluous and potentially annoying.

Gotcha, thanks for explaining ... I didn't realise it was connected to emails, I'd assumed it was part of the online/on-forum Alert system up at the top left of the home page .... which I like very much.

Bet you're getting sick of me already.  :embarrassed:

Hee hee ... I'm not that brave.

I didn't know what mentions meant myself. Now I do. Questions are no problem.

Notifications on many boards would use emails but I didn't take a mailbox with the domain and as I said use a freebie option instead which limits the number of emails - https://www.smtp2go.com/ That is fine for lost passwords and signups but doesn't allow lots of emails - they are just blocked once the limit is reached.

I'd never really thought of it before ... but in that case you don't really want Notifications stuffing up your quota. ( I hope that isn't as painful as it sounds).

The irony is, the first thing most folk do when joining a forum is to duck into their settings and disable it.

Alerts are no problem. It's emails that could cause an issue. I doubt anybody wants loads of those anyway. I think the settings should stop it happening anyway.
