I think Billy Cotton must have been the last big band leader.

Raven

My mum never used to miss The Billy Cotton Band Show on a Saturday night. Usually followed by The Black n White Minstrel Show.

Saying that I think Joe Loss had a big band, although he called it an orchestra

Raven

I don't know, it's not my sort of music. When BCBS used to come on the telly I was off.

I wouldn't have called it my kind of music in the day of Beatles and Rolling Stones etc. Good to hear them live though. Living in London we could get tickets for BBC shows.

I lived in Shepherds Bush from 1946 to 1961 and went to the Shepherds Bush Empire on many occasions.

We used to get the big bands at the Orchid Ballroom that wasn't too far away.. Some great bands..
Rock 'n Roll .. jiving.. the creep.. hand jive..
We used to hitch hike all over the place.. Brighton was popular too..
Don't ask me.. I know nuffink..

I wasn't into big bands at all when I was young I suffered from Beatlemania. My Mum was a big fan so it's not surprising I know a lot of the words to songs from 1950s.
