Title: playing instruments,
Post by: alfred on January 13, 2022, 08:40:01 AM
Over many years iv been lucky to have come across family talented musicians   and as children then many of us started with the mouth organ.
others went on to play the piano , some became drummers or violinists ,
and so others learned to play the trombone, or the trumpet,

the ones i knew were mainly pianists, some self taught others were taught by professional piano tutors ,and end up reading sheet music.

the one i think takes some beating is the  accordion , as the hand not only pump the air into the instrument but press the base keys on one hand whilst playing the tune on the other,    much like rubbing your head with one hand and rubbing your belly with the other. trying to do two things at once,

and yet i love the sound of this instrument as i think its one of its own much like the bag pipes, another lovely sound,

Q; were you ever a musician, if so what did you play  and will you share your thoughts with us,.

Apart for the triangle at primary school, never successfully played an instrument in my life, although I did try, without success, to learn the violin as a child and, many years later, the guitar. Hopeless at both

I can play a gramophone and | can play the fool.
Unlike Mike, I can't play the triangle as I'm a square.

I used to play guitar in a rock band in the late 70s early 80s. Haven't picked one up in years.

Daughter No1 played Piano but gave it up to study more (She got a PHD from Oxford)

Daughter No2 started playing Sax in Primary School and now plays in and runs a professional Big Band (and works as a Primary School Weapons Grade)

Son is a very talented guitarist and teaches guitar and piano in schools for our local education authority as well a gigging regularly all over the North. (Got an MA in music arrangement and composition)

You're just trying to make me jealous! Actually, well done them. My father taught piano and singing, his mother was a professional singer, including providing voice accompaniment to silent films (including 1,000 times to the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse!) my late brother played double bass in the school orchestra, but never took music further, three of his four sons played in bands in their youth - somehow, the music talent  gene took one look at me, shuddered, and scarpered

Played recorder at school, that was all but I had a school friend who had a piano which I used to like to plink on. Older bro had an old guitar but he was left handed so It was no good to me. Had to wait until I'd joined the army before I ever had enough money to buy my first guitar. A big, lump o' wood Japanese 12-string..Had to learn it really as I'd spent mum's board and lodging money on it, so I bought a tune-a-day Bert Weedon book and taught myself. After a few thousand hours playing and practicing I was competent and popular at parties, which is why I'd learned in the first place..and I never looked back!

Good one there zoony. Wish I had a musical bone but I 100% don't. The children all do courtesy of their mum.

I have an odd musical wiring error in my head. I can tell if almost anybody is out of tune by even a small margin. In fact there is only one person I know of who I can't tell immediately they are off - even when so badly out of tune they could do a sing-along with Les Dawson. As you have doubtless guessed that person is me.

 Why worry? Music needs an audience as well as players. It's how much enjoyment you get from it that matters in whichever way you do.
I'd love to be good with my hands but have never been but it matters only rarely..

My father could play anything he picked up - it just seemed to come to him naturally. I never got further than 3 chords on the guitar and chopsticks on the piano. Me on the recorder (in school) would have been enough to torture anyone!

Fancy that! I remember writing it and why..It seems to be a song that a lot of people can identify with..The singer on this one was the engineer who thought he was doing me a favour bless him... And it wasn't ready!

Thank you Mike. As a sing-along it works well but the lyric is rubbish. Doesn't scan properly or even rhyme.. I wish he'd left it but he was being kind as I'd used up my paid-for studio time and it was late so I'll not complain. (But I am..)
