Title: What's your game.. ?
Post by: Scrumpy on January 29, 2022, 11:52:11 AM

I notice that there are a few fishermen and golfers on here..
Have any others got a pastime or sport that they like doing or watching..!!
Harry, my first husband, was a keen darts player.. Thick fog ,  and snow drifts would not stop a match being played..
Sam.. was a golfer.. Him and his mates from the fire brigade would go out with their sticks come rain or shine..  Heavy frost , driving rain would not stop a game of golf.. And he always blamed the weather when he lost a ball..

No hobbies for me I'm afraid, unless you count shopping though I don't do so much of that now.  A friend and I used to go shopping in some lovely little towns into Lancashire, Pendle, Rawtenstall, Oswaldtwistle, some great names and lovely scenery too, so it used to be a great day out.

My mate, an Essex girl , used to travel down to stay at the weekend.. We loved Sunday morning .. we would go to local car boots looking for the Holy Grail..
Some of the best days.. great fun..

No hobbies now - unless reading, TV and on fora count - but in earlier days cycling, target shooting, cricket, model aircraft all combined to entertain me

For Christmas I bought my son-in-law a Lego model kit of his favourite motorbike..
When he unwrapped the gift his face was 'magic'.. He even took a pic of it and sent it to his mate..
He couldn't wait for my daughter Marnie to go away for her 'flappy weekend ' with her mates.. He kept sending out pics of the different stages of the build..

My son loves Lego, he has all sorts he's bought 'for the kids!'

I read lots, the legacy of being an only child I think.  Sudoku, online chess and scrabble. Good for the grey matter, and I like my aqua aerobics classes. They don't hurt like exercises out of the water, but they do as much good, or so I tell myself.  I like a bit of light gardening when the weather suits too.

I think I would like to try Lego..
I enjoy dry clay modelling .. and of course a bit of simple DIY...

I first started machining metal, as a schoolboy, in 1957.
Still at it, in my retirement workshop. Making, mending, modifying, hot air engines.
Very little beats the buzz, when one comes to life, for the first time....

Hi  Scrumpy I think the forums made up of couch potato's  :grin:no time to be active. It does surprise me, very few members on any forum who play golf. Yet on golf courses during the week thousands of retired people will be enjoying playing golf.  :?: :?: :?: I spend just as much time on youtube learning about the game than I do posting on the forum. My par 3 handicap dropped from 26 to 22 in 4 games. I want by the spring to have an 18 H.C which equals 36 on the main course. A short while ago 28 was the maximum which a player could have which would stop player like my self having any chance of winning a game. 54 is now the highest 3 shots allowance of every hole.

Don't listen to a couch potato though Hugh keep on enjoying it  :upvote:

Hugh.. If a person is able bodied and interested then golf, fishing and the like could be for some.. Perhaps our 'Couch potatoes' enjoy what THEY do.. each to their own..

I enjoy entertaining.. I organize it all .. Even the entertainment.. The games /tasks takes months to plan..
We have car boot challenges in the summer..
Teams having to invent new product .. jingle.. and tv ad..
We have pram races.. Adults pushing prams with dolls in..
I suppose you could call it a bit of a hobby..

Yes Scrumpy far to many people enjoy being couch potatoes watching the box all day. Myself I far sooner spend more time exercising and living a much longer, healthier enjoyable life in the company of other like minded pensioners. Apart from Raven who enjoys her morning swim and exercising her dog. Getting active in any sport seems to be a no go subject on this forum. I will bore you no further with my enjoyable life style.

I do exercise, using a treadmill and 'floor exercises' and walk in the park when the weather is suitable. With a bad back since 1954 and - for the last 9 months - only one effective arm it is difficult to think of a sport in which I could participate. The back precludes bowls and golf, and I can't think of a sport in which I could safely indulge

just thought - there is one sport in which I could still participate - target shooting. I used to shoot both rifle and pistol and was reasonably proficient, but pistols are now banned for the law abiding and the rigmarole of applying for a firearms licence is off-putting in the extreme.

Bloody hell! Just done a bit of idle curiosity digging, and the modern equivalent of my Walther KKM prone match rifle is over £5,000!

just re-read the ad and realised it was a European supplier and the price was in Euros. A UK supplier has the weapon for a mere £3,300. Think that I will pass!

Don't know what I was thinking - no way can my gammy left arm support the weight of a rifle - it can't even open the car door, doubtless to the dismay of the producers of the new highway code. Still, the thread triggered some nice memories of my shooting days

There are many quite good players only having one arm playing golf Mike. Bad back that's a very different matter unless pain killers helps.

Just been on youtube and found a coach giving lesson on how to play golf with one arm.

One twist to swing a club and I'd be using a Zimmer or even a wheelchair! The back would give in instantly - it doesn't like being rotated other than very slowly and gently. I do a raft of gentle exercises every day to try and keep it strong and supple - but it often has a mind of its own. Once spent three days unable to stand, let alone walk, after moving a sheet of A4 paper from the pile on my right to the pile on my left. I was on my hands and knees sorting out papers I needed for meetings that day - needless to say, I never got to them - instead I crawled to the stairs and somehow managed to get up them and back to bed. Fortunately, this was a Friday so I managed to get back into work on the Monday.

I think you misunderstand the comment.
Brian posted

A lorry driver threw a lit cigarette out of his cab once and I was driving a car with an open roof at the time. Fortunately it did not go into my eye but it was close.

In agreement, I posted

'I find it hard to believe just how much the low lives in our society just toss out of car windows..'

How does your comment grow out of those two posts?
Mike
