Title: The Responder
Post by: Alex on January 26, 2022, 01:51:58 PM
Anyone see this programme on BBC 1 Monday night ?   I saw it at my son's house and thought it was very good .  Old Lord Sugar is complaining that the actors used Liverpool accents which he couldn't understand.  Ermmmm  it was set in Liverpool and written by an ex Liverpool cop.   The auld buggar should have put the sub-titles on his 90 inch telly if he was having problems with the accent, which incidentally Martin Freeman had down to a tee  9/10 for me I didn't give it a 10 as there was too much effin and jeffin.

All 5 episodes are available at Zoony's Video Emporium. Downloading now.

Half way through Bosch Season 6 and I'm getting a little jaded with it now. Probably give that a go when that S6 is done - couple of days most likely. Then finish Bosch off with S7 and probably on to Grimm which Raven rocommended. Oh and Sleepy Hollow and.. and.. Phew....

Remind me again how to I download Zoony's emporium and do I need to do it on a VPN which I haven't got !   Maybe I could do it on my old desktop PC with Windows 7  ?

No real need for a VPN imo. I don't actually run the torrents so certainly don't need one.

What I do and history. Another of my rambles in fact... skip past this para if you want...
I've had a sub with https://real-debrid.com/ for years from the days of putlockers - sites like MegaUpload where folks uploaded the movies. You needed a sub for a fast download and there were lots of sites. The way around that was a Debrid site - they had multiple licences with the putlockers and you had access via the debrid site's licence. Most of those putlocker sites got shut or obstructed along with the best known torrent site ThePirateBay. Then I made use of the other feature of real-debrid - it would run the torrents for you. These days most of the torrents you get have already been run and you get a straight download from their servers - they normally run at line speed. My line is 500Mbps so it don't take long.

Assuming you skipped that you'll need to run a torrent client which I never have - best ask zoony.

Use this Alex. https://www.magnetdl.com/
A VPN is recommended but I've never used one. (I don't get on with 'em.. not bright enough.) You'll need to get to know it a bit and will need a magnet link..Perhaps download this: https://www.utorrent.com/. Feel free to ask.

What's a magnet link ?
Title: Re: The Responder
Post by: zoony on January 26, 2022, 02:50:13 PM
It grabs the film/tv show and makes sure it downloads properly and quickly on your machine..Just makes things faster and surer.

Whe you have installed your torrent client and have found what you want on magnet.dl right click on the little magnet icon and select "copy link". I think the torrent client will be monitoring the clipboard and start running it. If not you'll need to paste it in. The content is mostly gobbledegook. This is the one you want just as text...

It isn't. Believe me it isn't. If you can paste a link in here then you can download stuff.

Those that don't want you to download stuff do. You cant get a virus from a movie. You could from a dodgy site but neither of the sites I've mentioned are dodgy. Copyright breaking maybe but not dodgy.

I've watched the first two episodes on BBC. I'll watch it all, I think Theresa May should have to watch it. She might just realise the result of decimating police numbers.

I only watched a tiny portion just to assess the download but had no problem with the accent. Accents are odd old things. I tend to think of myself as having none but have met folk who have known instantly where I'm from just from talking.

If you are a Scouser believe me you have. There are enough of you to identify your origin in seconds. I was just so gobsmacked when somebody told me my origin when I have no accent at all

Unlike all those in Rugby where I lived for some time or all the Essex boys I worked with when I worked at Ford Parts in Daventry.

Mike, you'll be in trouble!

I know obviously that I have an accent. My children never sounded like me for starters!  My English born OH sounded Scottish when we met, he'd lived there since childhood, but now its not at all obvious where he's from. He sounds more generally English than me, but has no strong regional accent.

You may well be correct but habituation with a voice somehow makes it accentless I think. Thats why many think they have no accent (like me but I know I do).

it would be fun to have a facility for us to record our voices on here so folk could have a guess at one's origins!

They'd need to be randomised as we already know a fair bit about each other.

Folks could all record the same agreed message on
https://online-voice-recorder.com/ (or other that was the first that came in a search)
PM their recording to the organiser who could then put up a post of links and we could try to put a userid to each recording.

Well volunteered Mike.

When in Australia some were fascinated by my SE (accent).. Whatever that is.. !!
I don't think I have an accent.. I find Northerners hard to understand.. the further up the harder it becomes..  and as for Scottish..!!!

I found it entirely non intuitive when I tried but did get one done as a test.

I've added an mp3 as an attachement above. If you click it then it will download. It won't play. You could play it but it would all be a pita. I could probably put something together but it wouldn't be trivial and maybe wouldn't work for everybody anyway. The MP3 is me fiddling about with that voice recording site.

I watched the first episode this evening and had no problem understanding the accent or the idioms though I admit that accent-wise there was no quarter given..

Something else occurs to me. When I worked as an employee it was mostly international companies and I had a lot of contact with people who didn't have English as their first language. When contracting I travelled around a fair bit and worked with people from all over. I never worked with black Americans and find I do struggle with those accents in the  Bosh I am watching at the moment. Maybe it's just a case of becoming accustomed. Seems likely to me.

I'll have a look for some scripts that will record and playback sound. This isn't something I want to write from scratch but there are scripts for most things that can be quickly adapted. An optional voice hello from posters may be (or may not be) welcome.

Found some simple stuff but it's all javascript which is not my forte and I need to figure a way to pass the internal stream held by the broswer on to php so I can store it on the server. It does have a save to local disk function so that will be where I need to make the junction. It will happen. Not sure when yet.

Sorry to deviate for the current topic

Watched first episode of the Responder. No problem with accents but I had too much trouble in suspending my disbelief that any copper so clearly mentally unstable would keep his job. I don't think I'll watch the rest. Maybe I missed some deeper meaning.
