Ten years ago (14th of December) today 20 children and six adults were massacred at Sandy Hook Primary school by Adam Lanza who then committed suicide. Before the massacre, he had murdered his mother. He genuinely had mental health problems which had first been identified at the age of three. How someone with a life-long history of mental illness was able to obtain weapons seems incredible - but it happened.

In think I've worked out how....

The Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting occurred on December 14, 2012, in Newtown, Connecticut, United States, when 20-year-old Adam Lanza shot and killed 26 people. Twenty of the victims were children between six and seven years old, and the other six were adult staff members. Earlier that day, before driving to the school, Lanza shot and killed his mother at their Newtown home. As first responders arrived at the school, Lanza died by suicide by shooting himself in the head.

it may be a case horse and stable door but:-

>>Gun laws in Connecticut are amongst the most restrictive in the country. Connecticut requires training, background check and permitting requirements for the purchase of firearms and ammunition; and a ban (with exceptions) on certain semi-automatic firearms defined as "assault weapons" and magazines that can hold more than 10 rounds.<<

Now I don't know if the requirement for background checks existed ten years ago, but hopefully there would be a better change of picking up such a deranged individual now

In the Red Neck states I think you get classed as mentally deficient if you have less than 10 guns.

Michael Rolls

probably true! Although Connecticut isn't red neck territory

That's why they have tighter gun laws. As you suggested they couldn't have had at the time. It was Dunblane here that ensured only drug runners and the like have handguns now.

Michael Rolls

that's right - and from what I remember, allowing Hamilton to renew his firearm certificate was a failure of police procedure.
