Title: The flags are out..
Post by: Scrumpy on May 27, 2022, 02:48:57 PM

Today our little school has a small fete to celebrate the Jubilee.. They have put up the bunting and are flying a big ENGLAND flag..
The trestle tables came out and were covered with cakes and bric-a-brac.. A little game of skittles was set up...
People queued outside the school until the automatic/security gates were opened by a member of staff .. They were escorted across the playground towards another gate that had to opened by a member of staff.. Each time the gates were firmly closed again until another visitor showed up..

I think it is sad that some schools have to be locked and bolted or supervised by a member of staff.. before a visitor can enter..
Gone are the days when we just strolled in.. walked around.. spent a few bob.. had a chat and a nice cup of tea, a cake and then strolled home..
Weapons Grades must worry all the time when they are responsible for children..

She's Queen of more than England. More than Great Britain. Should be a  :gb: at least.

... and that is the flag they flew..
I didn't know what to call it for fear of being corrected..
I call it the Union Jack..

I was corrected on that, it's known as the Union Flag as the Union Jack only applies to ships.   Union flag reminds me of the American Civil War.

Union Jack/Union Flag I don't care to me they both mean :gb: but the England Flag is  :engl: which was what surprised me.

We always called our flag the Union Jack.. and that is what I shall continue to call it.. :gb:
I did know that there was an England flag  :engl: my friend down the road flies it when England are playing.. He also flies an Italian one when they are playing..

One of our neighbours has covered the front of his house in flags, pictures of the Queen etc.

I am a bit surprised but think it is rather nice.  There is a street party near us but our street is not closing.  There is an event in the local park next Friday with entertainment, a farmers market etc.

All the children had these :gb:  :gb: yesterday at the school picnic.  Lots, including my granddaughter wore Jubilee teeshirts, and they had packed lunches in Union Jack (I've always called it that too)boxes.

Our charity shop has a lovely window display, we've saved all the royal related items for ages.  Customers have been complimentary.  I like seeing the flags and bunting.  At the Coronation we had loads of bunting and flags in Scotland, :scot:  :gb:,  ours was the Yellow and Red Lion Rampant.  We had street parties, and commemorative gifts.  Pleased to see lots of celebrations planned across the UK.

They are a bit of fun for communities, and don't have to cost much.

And of course I would expect a few songs written for the Jubilee to be played in the streets.

Watched with tears of pride cascading from my cheeks. What other small country of the shores of Europe can claim

The first legal prohibition of slavery and using - at great cost - the navy to enforce it?
Leadership in the industrial revolution, leading millions out of agrarian poverty?
The introduction of parliamentary democracy, copied by many non-dictatorships throughout the world?
Britain isn't/has been over the centuries perfect, but to my mind, a damn sight better than many - and now we are surrendering our political elite to the scum of the world's rejects.
What has happened?

I just wanted to see the horse parade, especially Ed and Abby the wonderful Drum Clydesdales.
That was some fly past too, lovely to see the old Lancaster, such a special plane with an undeniable engine sound.

So much has changed or gone from Britain since 1952, but her Maj is still here, God bless her.
Nobody does it like us Brits  !

Those Clydesdales are lovely, aren't they?' Always love the BBMF and the sound of those Merlins!

No other does it better than we Brits..  It was wonderful to see the faces in their thousands walk down the Mall towards Buckingham Palace.. The Union Jacks flying and being waved..
The balcony appearance of the Queen was a sight for sore eyes..
The lighting of the beacons being started by the Queen.. The tree that  was  lit up was stunning..

AND IT DIDN'T RAIN...  :yahoo:

I've worked that when I went to the Trooping, as I mentioned in another thread, it was 1961, 2nd Battalion, the Scots Guards

The flags are out alright, in Nelson Lancashire though it's the Palestinian flag flying from the Town Hall.

i believe it is illegal to fly a foreign flag, and that council should feel the full weight of the law... when i was a lad to fly the Scottish flag above the union jack [ :gb:] was a hanging offence

We had a street party here..  Union Jacks all over the place..
People shared plates of food.. and dressed up in all different fashions from over the years..
We had music of all sorts and a great guitarist/singer.. As the evening wore on others, who were up for it, took to the mike..
The road wasn't officially closed but the few motorist who wanted to use it were happy to gave it a miss..
I gave in at at around 10.. I had been there for hours.. It was still going on  when I fell asleep..  I should have called from the window 'SHUT UP.. OLD PEOPLE AND BABIES ARE TRYING TO GET TO SLEEP'  :yell:

We didn't have any celebrations in my road, not even a Union flag was hoisted  Too many Johnny foreigners and students here I'm afraid.
