I'd listened to the earlier DCI Banks novels before but downloaded some new ones and have been going through them all again. I thought the earlier ones gave away some of Peter Robinson's (the author) character  (a letcherous old boozer who had problems giving up fags as that is how Banks is portrayed) and the newer ones certainly peg him as a devout Remainer who resents the referendum result

Unusually I find the televised version of something considerably better than the original books which seem to be stories of pub crawls, troughing and letchery with a murder mystery as a minor part of the tale.

Raven

I have most of the Banks books on audio and I really enjoy them. If you want a real gritty detective series the go for the Logan McRae ones. It's set in Aberdeen, the author doesn't hold back and they are very enjoyable if you have a strong stomach.

Thanks Raven. I will look those up and see if they are in stock in the Emporium.

Raven

Stewart MacBride is the author, you need to read them in order, as well as the stories there's another story that runs through the whole lot of them and links them together.
These are some of the early books in the series.

I've found a potential download of the first 12

Whether ir will work or not I'm not sure. There are some individual ones that will but as you say many of these series need reading in sequence.

I have high hopes of that one as it has started to rock and roll and at a goodly lick.

Raven

It's a great series I'm sure you will enjoy it. There's some comedy in the series as well. That comes in the form of his boss Roberta Steele, the lesbian who is hilarious. Won't say any more.  :lipsrsealed:

They all downloaded OK along with some short stories and a couple of other novels by Stuart MacBride. Thanks for the pointer. I'll give them a try once I've finished my last Banks which I'm half way through.

In the unlikely event that anybody else is looking for magnet links for audiobooks I use http://audiobookbay.nl/ rather than https://www.magnetdl.com/ for those.

To avoid ISP / Copyright problems I don't run any torrents myself but zoony used to without issue.

Raven

It's audiobookbay that I use, have done for years. I used to use demomoid it was really good but it got taken down.

I'm a fan! I've read most of them, love the characters.

I'm reading the latest Ian Rankin.  John Rebus is his, now retired, cop. Set in Edinburgh as a bonus.
Its not how old you are, but how you are old. 💖

Along with his new partner, a wee dog he adopted. Brillo I think he got named.
I like the Malcom Fox stories too.

GM, Does this carry on from the TV series? I used to like that, I preferred John Hannah to Ken Stott although they were both good. I have never read the books though.

The TV series came after the books.  I actually prefer Ken Stott, but neither he or John Hannah looks like the Rebus I imagined when I read the books.  Tom Wilkinson, who played Gerald in the Full Monty is the nearest to how I pictured Rebus before I saw the TV shows.  Of course he wouldn't sound right!

You're right Raven, the dog is Brillo.

Ken Stott is exactly how I saw Rebus, but then it's always been audio books for me and I think the voice makes a big difference to how you see a character.

I haven't seen much Rebus but recalled a Ken Stott episode or two so visited the Emporium and grabbed all I could find for my ever expanding boxset collection. I watched the first one mostly to evaluate the video quality as they are old and it was John Hannah not who I was expecting. I will watch them but right now they are on the back burner as I have so much stuff already in progress.

I've made a start on listening to the Logan McRae books. Finished the first and well into the second. Very entertaining. Thanks again for the pointer Raven.
