Quote from: muddy on April 23, 2024, 02:58:39 PMIt was the age of empire Scrumpy .Well said, Muddy.
All conquering countries did these things .
You cannot judge a country by the mores of yesteryear .
And we did do some good things
We gave them the gift of language for a start
The language of the world .
The countries we colonised are the better countries of the world today.
Look at the countries that were ruled by the Spanish who also had a huge empire.
The Portuguese , the Dutch .
None of these countries have amounted to much .
They are poor and backward in many ways .
While India once ruled by us is a powerhouse in the east .
We did many bad things but we did good too .
We left them our language , our education and legal systems and our railways .
Quote from: Scrumpy on April 23, 2024, 11:52:50 AMHow arrogant that sounds..It was the age of empire Scrumpy .
We treated most of them as second class citizens.. We believed our way was the only way..
The Aborigines of Australia were treated badly and became a second class race.. and still are..
The Red Indian of the US was treated equally as bad.. and still are..
These being just a couple of examples..
They were doing alright until we claimed their countries..
Quote from: Diasi on April 23, 2024, 12:49:12 PMIt's my Dad's birthday, he was born in 1905.I completely agree.
I wonder what he'd have made of the UK today.
At least his generation didn't live long enough to see that D Day was just a waste of time & lives.
Quote from: JBR on April 23, 2024, 11:11:57 AMHappy St George's Day, whilst we still have it.
I read that black taxi drivers in Londonistan have been instructed not to fly the English flag, which is something they apparently have done for years.
Perhaps Palestinian flags will be OK?

Quote from: Scrumpy on April 23, 2024, 09:11:25 AMI bet few people know that it is St Georges Day.. very sad..I never remember St Andrew's day. Can't miss St Patrick's though, there's usually a Guinness beer tent in the centre of town!
Quote from: Diasi on April 23, 2024, 12:49:12 PMIt's my Dad's birthday, he was born in 1905.A year after mine. They lived through two world wars, my father saw active service in the second. He was a chivalrous, old school type, who sadly never even made it to 60. I bet they'd all be shaking their heads.
I wonder what he'd have made of the UK today.
At least his generation didn't live long enough to see that D Day was just a waste of time & lives.
