At least three electricity suppliers (of whom, surprise, surprise SSE are one) have been manipulating the National Grid by closing down production prior to peak periods, then restarting but demanding - and getting - greatly increased recompense. Ofgem, king of the toothless tigers, are 'looking into it', Apparently on one day alone, this netted them an extra £42 million, and overall it has cost consumers over half a billion pounds. Blackmail!

From the story...

The practice, which does not break existing market rules, involves generators warning the electricity system operator that they are turning their power plants off at times of peak demand and subsequently offering to keep them running in exchange for a "balancing" payment.

Sounds to me like those rules need revision along with the nonsense that pays wind producers the going rate for gas. The public has been well and truly stiffed.
