Title: Why are They Still W.F.H.?
Post by: Raven on May 01, 2022, 01:02:16 PM
I have been wondering about this for a while now. So many places you can't get into, like the Council Offices for example. Blooming annoying. Should they be told to get back? What's your take on it? :hmm:

Working from home is the way forward & the Civil Service should embrace it & save £millions on expensive office buildings.

The trouble is you can never get hold of a live person in  big organisations,  they all want you to do everything online, even finding a phone number is extreamly difficult.  They do not want to speak to you when you have a problem, most annoying.  What do these people actually do from home? I would be interest to know.

Probably surfing the internet same as they would in the office. Still as pointed out they are using their own heating and electric but I suppose they get their internet paid for.

My son works mainly from home since Covid Jacq. He manages a team of IT programmers and developers.  They have no contact with the public in any form so their location is irrelevant.

Daughter in law, an IT project manager, has pretty much worked from home, for a number of years. She has international colleagues  and no contact with the public.

Some public sector employees can work from home, but there are others who need to be accessible to the public, especially for the vulnerable without IT capability. But I agree with Diasi about the savings that can be made.

Exactly.  :waiting: I would not have been able to WFH in any case as I needed to be at my workplace. But I would have hated doing that anyway, my home life and work life were kept well apart.

I spent time working from home. Doing so was difficult. Too many distractions.

Most of my working life involved meeting with people - GPs, hospital staff, welfare homes staff, dialysis patients, site foremen, clerks of works, chairing design teams, etc. - all a bit difficult to have done from home.

There's a couple of 40 somethings who are friends and swim in the mornings, overheard them talking a few days ago, grumbling about having to return to the office. They are spending several hours a day at the Leisure Centre nowadays, over in Wick for shopping trips and out for lunch a lot. So much for WFH. :waiting:

Of course. Me too when I was visiting tenants, doing inspections, interviewing applicants.  My nurse daughter absolutely couldn't work from home.  I wouldn't consider most jobs suitable for home working.

But surely we're referring to those whose work is 100% computer based, and whose staff and colleagues are in different places, even different countries and continents?  What would be the advantage to an employer of insisting they go to an office every day?

The manager of the women Raven refers to is at fault if they're not working as and when they should.

I couldn't have worked from home.....
I operated a CNC Machining Centre, making rock drilling equipment. The bare machine weighed over 3 tons!

I was able to easily enough as all I needed was a connection. I used to do all the Sunday special maintenance from home on one contract but they wanted bums on seats in the week.

The extended time working from home was when I bust an achilles tendon. That took 8 weeks before the plaster was off. Using the tube was a nightmare in plaster and crutches so I worked from home and just went in occasionally and used a taxi instead.
