I don't think there is any particular reason why the naughty children tried it on at the Ashes, just that there was a large crowd for them to play to.

As others elsewhere have said, I'd love to see them come on with their orange powder at a major football match, especially at one of the locations where the fans would 'react' to them!

Very true, but I suspect that there may be some political, or judicial, influence here.
The government is known to be woke, and judges probably the same, and may (for some unknown reason) want to support the naughty children.
