Title: Royal tour..
Post by: Scrumpy on March 23, 2022, 07:45:29 AM

It would seem that the royals are less popular then they once were..
William and Kate are not experiencing the welcome that , over the years, the Queen has..
The couple are more down to earth , not (fussy) or showy and much more approachable..
However the people are able to show their displeasure  without being hidden..
Is this a sign that the monarchy are slowing losing their popularity.. ?
I think Andrew has much to answer for..

This is how the monarchy has been able to maintain the illusion of world-wide popularity.

Also going on a nice Caribbean holiday when the rest of the country is going up shit creek doesn't help their popularity.

I've always been pretty ambivalent about the monarchy. I assume we have to have a head of state and we have recently seen just how badly things can go wrong with a parliament which became totally useless (as opposed to the normal fairly useless) from mid 2016 right through to the end of 2019. A monarch provides a stable and ineffectual figurehead together with (usually) no fuss over succession. A president brings more politics into things. On the whole I think I prefer less politics and will settle for a monarchy which probably works out cheaper anyway as the Queen can't buy aircraft carriers etc. I don't see that popularity matters much one way or the other as what us plebs think about anything doesn't seem to matter anyway.

A monarchy such as the ones in Spain & the Netherlands would be just about acceptable to me.

Popularity does matter..  Us (plebs) are speaking up now.. and listened to..
If we warm to someone they appear to be more acceptable.. A bit like the Diana thing..
However.. we can speak up now when we disapprove ..
The rich  style in which they are living does not go down too well when many are struggling...
I much prefer a Royal figurehead rather than some power crazy person ...

Reperations for what? they live on a lovely island most people who live in damp cold British cities would love to live in, they are lucky to be there.  Ok people a couple of hundred years ago were brought there as slaves, while our people were working in mills, mines and other awful dangerous places for a pitance. The rich benefited from slavery and also from our ancestors working here in dreadful conditions.  Please can I have compo for my g.g. grandparents  who died in the Irish famine, or my ancestors who worked for rich landowners and were so poor in old age landed up in the workhouse.

Using the same criteria half the British people would have a case to answer for the way they were treated all those years ago.  These slaves died two hundred years ago, compo won't do them much good will it? anymore than compo for my family would do for them.  I don't know why the poor old British people should fork out for them, let them trace and sue the families of people who kept them as slaves, see if they have a case to answer in court.

Not at all. As I said. I was reminded of the 'Dedication' song he used to sing. It wasn't a criticism..
