I thought that the Syrian government which the Russians helped was still in power. They have been allies for a long time.

Yes the Russians were supplying the Assad government with wepons, so its pay back time I guess.
They were delivering ordnance to the opposition too. Dropped from their planes onto them. Plus plenty of civillians.
Russia has also been a good friend to India.... so the whole world looks at Putin with diffrent glasses..
