Not content with cancelling services left right and centre, claiming that Scotland is experiencing temperatures 'out of the Sahara', Scotrail has engineers out painting rails white 'to prevent them from melting'!
Really - according to the precise alloy, steel melts at between 2500 and 2800F. If we really are experiencing those sort of temperatures, then we don't have to worry about global warming - we'd all be dead!
What sort of clown comes up with these sort of quotes? Scotland MAY experience its highest ever temperatures in the next 12-24 hours - summat a bit over 33C (highest to date is 32.9C) but melting rails? Oh dear!
Mike
It has clearly been hot enough to fritz brain cells already though....
agreed
It's poor reporting, the idea is to reduce the amount of heat that the rails absorb & therefore reducing the expansion & buckling of the track,
They are talking of tracks buckling down here.. No mention of 'melting tracks'..
Some info on buckling...

We built Railways in India and Africa, there are railways that go across deserts of the USA I expect they get hotter than here, do their rails melt and buckle, how do they manage? We get the wrong sort of heat the wrong sort of snow funny old country Britain?

I realise that, Phil - but what a quote!
I'm told that painting the rails white can reduce rail temperature by a few degrees, which can make a difference especially in points.
It ain't going to last long if a train goes over it.
They don't paint that bit.

I hope the paint any sides that don't catch the sun matt black. White reflects but black radiates much better.
