Title: P & O Ferries
Post by: Alex on March 17, 2022, 10:22:15 PM
The ferry company has sacked their 800 UK staff without notice and replaced them with cheaper, foreign agency workers.   Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem of Dubai, is the chairman of Dubai-based logistics giant DP World which part owns P & O - the other part is Russian owned.

This sort of practice should be outlawed. Those foreign workers taking the jobs were in coaches waiting to board apparently which means that they must have been given visas. I thought the Home Office were supposed to be snowed under with Ukranian refugee visa applications yet they found the time to put 800 British workers on the dole. This country is going to the dogs.

It's a terrible way to lose your job, over a mass video call.  :waiting:
A couple of years back my son lost his job along similar lines. The whole shift was told they were no longer needed as the place was only going to work a day shift, not a night one. A few weeks later the shift was back in place and was filled with foreign people being paid a lot less. There was a hell of a row about it but nothing could be done.  :downvote: :nooo:

P&O are in for a bit of a rough ride over this, I'm pleased about that as well........Nasty thing to have done.

Some people are blaming Brexit, now there's a surprise...... it's not Brexit, Irish Ferries did exactly the same in 2005.

Perhaps unions have just had their day ?  Better H & S regs, a minimum wage and new discrimination laws.  People don't want to pay £20 quid a month in subs any more.

It certainly has, just read this morning about a woman being raped in an English NHS hospital by a trans woman.  NHS policy states that trans people should be accommodated according to their presentation: the way they dress, and the name and pronouns they currently use, rather than their biological sex at birth.

That's the dogs for yer  !

It's 2 years til the next election. I wonder if Boris will hang on to the bitter end waiting for some good news just as Major :spit: did. I can't see anything much improving in the next 2 years and regardless of cause or whether the other lot would do any better when things are tough the government of the day get it in the neck. The only manifesto commitment they seem to be trying to keep is the Net Zero by 2050 one and that is going to cripple the economy.

Was Net Zero even mentioned in their manifesto  ?  not that I read it  but don't remember hearing about it in the papers.

I checked. It was. It wasn't mentioned much in the campaigning and I imagine most would have taken it as an aspiration. They've mentioned reducing immigration in plenty of manifestos and even in campaigns and we all know how well that's going. They won't be getting my vote in the upcoming council elections for sure.

We will not raise the rate of income tax, VAT or National Insurance. Apart from for working pensioners.

This one would be easier if made now...
Extra funding for the NHS, with 50,000 more nurses and 50 million more GP surgery appointments a year.

Is it something to do with our age ?   I don't remember feeling this helpless when I was younger

I suspect when we we younger we had little thought that we could change anything. Now we know we can't.
