For some time now the idea of food banks has for many people (not all) have been a blessing as people with little or no cash have had to manage on what ever they have earned, as food banks helps out saving money for other essential things.

now were in a situation that very shortly as bills for just about everything grow as prices for food and  domestic fuels etc, become that much more expensive  and  i imagine that an ever greater demand for food banks to grow in demand, as  many worse off families  turn to find ways of feeding their families especially those with young children , so as he tesco advert said  (every little helps )

its good  that many supermarkets are donating food that although still in the sell by date no longer recommended  are put to good use and its better for families to use food that is still safe to eat.

it does make me wonder just how much food in general is wasted in a year which sadly if used better would cut down waste ,
so with future trends as bills get dearer i imagine many people will use food rather than throw it away,

it seems sad that in the twenty first century that in many ways nothing really has changed that much  and in the past when food was plentiful people threw food away , without a care  today how ever the story has changed  as we are learning to become less wasteful as the world economics bite and money buys less than it used to,

Q; have you any thoughts regarding food banks, your answers will make interesting reading,.

what frustrates me - as I've mentioned before - is that now I rely on deliveries I can't come up with a way to donate food, which I always used to do when shopping at Tesco in Blairgowrie. They had a big sort of framed sack and it was gratifying to see just how many folk put things in it. I used to donate things like tins of stewing steak, soup and the like - always tins or packets so that I knew they wouldn't go off
As the cost of living rises, I am sure more and more people will be driven to use them.

Oh well, it shows that the cost-of-living increase isn't anything to worry about if people are able to donate part of their shopping expenditure.

Our local supermarkets won't be getting donations from me any time soon.

Everyone has to make their own judgement, Phil, As things stand I could still afford to donate food as before, just can't find a way of doing it.

I need to make a conscious effort to buy extra when I'm shopping.  I have a list of things I need, so when I'm through the checkout, that's where the collection bins are, and my bags contain all the stuff that was on my list.   I'd need to put my bags in the car and go back in to buy extra!   Perhaps signs every now and again around the aisles would remind people like me to buy 'extra'    Now I'm actually 'talking' about it I've just added  'Donation Bin' to my list  :upvote:

We have two types round here.

1. The traditional food bank where people need to get a referal/voucher for a food parcel lasting (I think) 4 days. They can only have so many in a given time perios - and I think it's three.

2. A "Pay as you feel" system where you can get things free or pay what you can. There's a big one of these here set up in an old school. They get food donated by supermarkets etc - still in date but often not time to get it from warehouse to shelves. There's a cafe where you can get a decent meal - and it's very good quality. When I was working I used to go their for my lunch sometimes and always paid a reasonable price.

I support foodbanks, but I believe there is a need to find out why some people are using them.  One of the biggest drains on low income households is debt, as they pay the highest interest rates.  Also the use of prepayment meters doesn't help.  Foodbanks should be a short term stopgap, not the norm.

Volunteers and workers with benefits and budgeting expertise would be useful in them all.

Yes, I could but I would much rather actually donate food rather than money which might, or might not, be put the use that I would like. I will have a look at the site, though

I get that, I feel similar.  Perhaps they have volunteers who collect?

when i was young i remember the horror of the old folks talking about 'the soup kitchens' and my own grandmother talking of the means test, where 'officials' would visit your home and 'suggest' that you sell your furniture rather than claim....
now i live in Doncaster there are no pits in Doncaster the pits were all around the town, and during our strife the womenfolks all got together and got collections from all the supermarkets and organised their own community kitchens in their miners welfare clubs... i had one meal in one, just to be able to say i had... these were amazing food halls for their community, everyone ate well...
my point being why cant this be done again in the times of hardship that might be in front of the nation... these women just did it... give them the tools and they will do the job...

The sad fact is not that all people are poorer, the gap between the have's and the have not's is getting bigger and bigger

I did have an externel link here but the system says "Sorry, you are not allowed to post external links"  ??

The rich are getting richer at the expense of the poorer, who, sadly, are getting poorer !!
