With my pedant's hat on, the Facebook post suggests Starmer was the instigator of all illegal immigrants getting benefits here. It's not exactly the case.  He was the barrister appointed to support some asylum claimants against a ruling about when an asylum claim should be made.  The case was about immigrants who had been in the UK for some time, either through illegal entry or overstaying visas, then applying for asylum.   Anyone claiming asylum immediately on arrival was given accommodation and some financial support, as they still are.

Quote from: JBR on December 13, 2023, 02:54:00 PMLogically, as they were all in France before they invaded the UK, the only true answer to whether they were in danger before they came to the UK must be "no".

The remaining problem is how to get them to admit to the country of their origin.  We need to know where to deport them.
One way is through linguistic specialists who can identify where people have lived by the language they speak, and how they speak it.  Language Analysis for Determination of Origin.

I believe very little of what FullFact say as they cherry-pick their so-called facts & then misrepresent & spin them.

Starmer's involvement led to all illegal immigrants being entitled to our benefits system as soon as they set foot on our shores.

Simple as that.

I'm a little dubious about registered charities being impartial, particularly on the subject of immigration.

They are just now discussing illegal immigration on GB News.

Apparently, in 2022 over 30,000 arrived here illegally on boats, and perhaps 10,000 on lorries.
In 2023 so far, 40,000 on boats (plus the lorry deliveries).
It is predicted that in 2024 it will have risen to at least 45,000 to 50,000 or more.

At the same time, Sunak is assuring us that he has reduced the illegal immigration figures by 30%!

I have come to the conclusion that the next government, be it Conservative or Labour will be unable to do anything to change what is happening and the inevitable increase in illegal immigration.
Equally, if people (as expected) vote for these two parties next year, Reform will not be able to do anything about this ongoing problem.  To be honest, Reform is frequently derided by those 'who know better' or, as on this same news programme, never even mentioned by politicians interviewees!

I'm afraid that the future of this country is clear.

No more than people posting randomly in Facebook.

The support given before 1999 was much more generous, cash was replaced by vouchers, if only for a short time.  Tony Blair changed how asylum seekers were treated in the UK, withdrawing their right to claim mainstream benefits.   The 2002 act aimed to reduce rights even more, and that was what Starmer challenged.

Everyone who supports open borders should go into a pool, and take the chance of being randomly selected to house an asylum seeker.  💡

Exactly my opinion too.

Absolutely and don't forget that Blair's wife a 'human rights specialist' was most active in extending aid to lawyers in that field and the munificent interpretation of EU Regulation that admitted unmitigated 800,000  from Poland alone within 3 years of inauguration.

Her 'manipulative' other half told us less than 8,000 would come here!

I believe what I read in the relevant Acts of Parliament, which enables me to challenge how FullFacts & Refugee Law Initiative present things.

Very interesting, but people from Poland were European citizens at this time and European citizens can work in any European country without any restrictions.
At this time my daughter spend two terms at the university of Newcastle with the Erasmus programme - it was a very interesting experience for her and the costs were taken over by "Erasmus". My granddaughter wanted to study in the UK and the costs are so high that she decided in favour of the Netherlands.
