I did read that when cling film first appeared it was very popular over there
This new? We were taught this in the early 1970s!
Just realized, it's 70 yrs since my mum and dad took possession of this house as young marrieds with me in arms and my late brother just toddling.. Who says I didn't have the right, and the luck, to be able to buy it?
certainly not me
My father in law bought his council flat. I have no beef with individuals who bought if they couldn't afford to buy on the open market. It was the only opportunity many had to become home owners. But it did discriminate against those who couldn't get a nice, mortgageable council property in a pleasant area.
I do have an issue with successive governments who, knowing the lack of affordable housing, have not withdrawn the Right to Buy in England. Scotland 🏴 and Wales 🏴 have done the right thing IMO.
I was never in agreement over the right to buy. I knew when it started that all the good areas would be bought and they were. Leaving a real shortage and no hope of familys getting out of flats and into a nice back/front door.
the cash was to be reinvested in more social housing another tHATCHER cock-up

Far more were built under her government than under Blair or Brown. https://fullfact.org/economy/who-built-more-council-houses-margaret-thatcher-or-new-labour/
I was working in a council housing department when Blair was elected, colleagues who'd been there years expected Labour to kick it into touch, but they didn't. Now lots are owned by private landlords, their tenants are paying through the nose with no security of tenure, and little if any maintenance.
If they had still been proper Labour then I'm sure it would have been kicked into touch. But Tony Blair was the one who changed the party into Tory Lite. Now they have lost all their old values......Mores the pity, we were always Labour Voters, even helped vote Tony in, but never again, unless they return to their roots of caring for the working folk.
They care more for the dinghy folk.
i said this was 70 years too late becaus i was at school seventy years ago....

Apropos nothing, is the Raven your clan animal?
Clan MacDougall is known to trace its ancestry from both the Gael and Norse cultures, as the founder Dougall (alternately Dougal or Dugall) had immediate family members of Norse descent. In order to strengthen these connections, it is believed that the animal symbol of the Raven was adopted.
Thank you. Clan MacDonald also I seem to think..Many Inuit have taken the Raven as one of their tribal gods too. Supposedly because of it's legendary ability to fly both backwards and upside-down..
I'm not sure how many have the Raven as one of their Mascots ect, but my favourite is the Clydesdale of Clan Forbes.

That's odd as I'd always thought ravens were supposed to be a bad omen and checking Google that is a common myth. The ones in the tower are a mixture. Ok while there but calamity should they leave.
Yes I knew about the Tower Ravens, I've been following a TV programme about them.
Ravens are also here, they nest in the ruins of the tower of Thurso Castle, I see them nearly every day.

Not many ravens or crows around town and I see few ravens anywhere but I have noticed that crows always seem to be attracted to ruins for some reason - good roosting sites I suppose.

is it the raven that has the hooked bill
there was one on our kitchen window and i have never seen such a hooked bill...
Ravens have a very slightly hooked bill, not a big curl.
crabbyob.. The raven is the biggest corvid, identifiable by size and it has a wedge-shaped tail..Very heavy beak which is slightly curved but not really hooked..
I have been told that some of the black birds around here are ravens, but they don't seem nearly as big as those I remember from the Tower of London. If they are indeed ravens, they are scarcely any bigger than crows - could that be the case?
Mike
Dunno Mike.. Look at this?
https://www.bto.org/develop-your-skills/bird-identification/videos/bto-bird-id-corvids
thanks for that, zoony. I've always been able to differentiate between crows and rooks, because of the latter's light coloured beak - and watching that video I am convinced that I have not seen ravens around here - there simply aren't any all black birds noticeably larger than a crow or rook. As I mentioned, I well remember the ravens at the Tower - much bigger than the crows and rooks around here
Mike
Just checked my 'Book of British Birds' which says that a raven is half as big again as a crow - there is nothing of that sort of size amongst the local corvids, so I am sure we have no ravens
Mike
the bird that landed on our kitchen window sill was big all black and a very hooked bill... and bloody miles away from the tower... [2090]
Here or there? Probably a vulture or something there and likely to be holy.
no mate i recognise vultures from John Wayne movies
Did you notice if the legs/feet were feathered? At this point we might consider a juvenile raptor of some kind? (It's the hooked beak..)

Not really been close enough to see if the beaks were hooked to any extent - but if there were juvenile ravens around, there would have to be adults as well, and there's nothing anything like big enough
Mike
