coal.

It seems that Germany have belatedly realised that shutting down their nuclear power stations and relying on Russian gas may have been a bit of a mistake. Their Green Energy push seems to have been put on the backburner as they reopen a mothballed coal fired power station.

Green Fail: Germany to Reconnect First Coal Power Plant to Energy Grid

In a demonstration of the failure of Germany's pursuit of so-called "green energy" and its policy of relying on Russian gas in the meantime, a coal-fired power plant will be reconnected to the nation's electricity grid.
While the economic powerhouse of Europe — so called — scrambles to secure energy sources before the winter months, the previously shuttered Mehrum coal power plant in Lower Saxony will become the first to once again be connected to Germany's grid.
On Monday, the manager of the Czech-owned EGH operating company,  Kathrin Voelkner said: "We have declared the return to the electricity market. We assume that we will return to the grid in the short term," according to the Frankfurter Neue Presse newspaper.
The move was preceded by the federal government implementing an emergency ordinance to allow mothballed oil and coal-powered plants to open back up until April of next year, as the country faces a shortfall in its energy amid the conflict in Ukraine.

Germans have also U turned on the last three of their nuclear plants ! Prior to Fukushima (sp  )they had 17 plants working, but the plan was no more nuclear ! Now there are just 3 left and they won't be closed this year as planned.

If Fukushima was the reason I'm surprised. Despite facing a tsunami sfaik there was no major leak from there and certainly no major nuclear disaster. My geography isn't all that good but I wasn't aware that Germany was a tsunami risk.

The Greens hate it that the closest we can get to zero carbon is nuclear.

If Europe does get through this winter somehow then I reckon that's Russia right up a gum tree as there will be no more gas sales there and those costly pipelines, with one either not yet or only just about to come online, being so much scrap metal.

The Greens are IMO in too much of a rush to change everything. They need to put the brakes on and let us back pedal for a while.

What a legacy Mutti left for the fatherland. Full of immigrants and short of energy. Not quite as bad as at least one of her predecessors of course....
