It seems Putin has cancer and is having an operation.
Putin will transfer control of Russia's government to Nikolai Patrushev, head of the Russian federal police's Security Council, while he is incapacitated during and after the procedure, according to a video from the mysterious Telegram channel "General SVR" on Saturday.

I imagine that the designated survivor is actually watching Patruchev very carefully under orders of Putin to make certain that any inheriting isn't premature.

who knows? It wouldn't be unknown for a successor to repudiate to deeds of the one who went before him - think of the vilification of Stalin after his death
