I find them far too distracting. I can't watch anything with subtitles other than when used for small portions of a documentary.

I used the use the GBNews Android app on a TV box with my bedroom TV and that had really laughable machine generated subtitles. My main TV has Roku and I bought a Roku box for the bedroom TV. The GBNews app on  that is excellent. 

The transistion would likely be an extinction event. The number of modern humans capable of surviving as hunter gatherers is going to be tiny. How long do you think you'd last?

I started to watch it but thought it was a load of rubbish so we turned to something else. Won't be watching again, each series gets dafter, used to love Dr Who at one time.
