Title: I'm in a right pickle.
Post by: Raven on January 03, 2023, 06:16:02 PM
I've landed myself in hospital, slipped on black ice and broken my tibia bone. 😭 The break has also damaged my replacement knee. I'm to have an operation tomorrow and they will see if they can patch it up with pins and screws.. If not it's another knee replacement after the tibia has healed itself, I'm out of action for the foreseeable, no driving, no swimming, no Clydes, no nothing.
I can't believe this has happened, I'm so annoyed at myself for not paying attention. The temp was to be rising a lot today, not going down. Heaven knows how long I will be in the hospital. Feeling angry, embarrassed and miserable. 😭

That's terrible. Best of luck with the operation tomorrow. Let's hope it works and reduces the time you are out of action.

Oh ! Raven.. What a bummer..
I always admired you when you said how much ice and snow you were having and STILL taking the hairy one out..  When I was loathe to climb the couple of steps from my house.. until I had spread grit on them.. and walking in the middle of the road because the pavements were icy.. I thought I was a woosie..

I hope all goes well with the op today..  Much love to you.. xx

Poor you Raven, it is so easy to take one wrong move and you have done yourself so much damage, my husband fell up one step and landed up with a hip replacement.

I hope all goes well with your op. and you will be back on your feet soon, my thoughts are with you, all the best, love,  Jac xx

Thanks Guys, I'm really scared about this as it's a real mess according to my CT Scan first thing. Surgeon says it's not a clean break and he has to rebuild my knee. Says there could be blood transfusions as there will be a lot of blood loss. Will have metal plates and screws in side. Maybe 3 to 4 hours. God I can't believe this happened I feel such a fool.

Don't worry too much Raven, my daughter had a bad car accident years ago and broke both legs, one with a compound fracture, took some time to repair but all healed up eventually.  Although it sounds scary I am sure you will be fine, your Surgeon sounds like he knows what he is doing.

Morning Guys, and Thanks, I went to theatre just before 2pm yesterday but it was 10pm before I got back to the ward. 😲😲 Don't know why but I will see the surgeon again today on his rounds, and see if I can get some answers. Had a painful night, hope it starts to ease soon.
Not a good WiFi connection here keeps coming and going.

If I had my boots with the ice grips on then I doubt it would have happened. I had been Out with Dageus and it was fine, drying up and the roads clear. The road just looked wet, I don't know where the ice suddenly came from. 😭

Was it black ice !! eh!!
Did you have to wait for an ambulance.. ?  and how long waiting to be seen and getting a bed..?
Down here you would still be laying in the ambulance..

I do hope all goes well.. It would seem that your treatment has been wonderful...

It seems my body was having bother with the stuff that keeps you awake during an op.They had to put me out for it, I have a 10inch nail in the bone beside the tibia, and a 10 hole metal plate on the other side holding everything together. I was in recovery for hours as I was in too much pain, and they kept putting me out again. Had a sore day, feeling pretty rotten.

Do you know yet if the repair work is the final job?

I've never had anything like that so no idea how long you are likely to be in pain. Hopefully they will be able to control it soon though.

I have had a lot of morphine and no food since Tuesday when I did this. Just a lot of water. I think it's all repaired now.

I hope so.

Any idea how long you'll be in plaster? When I busted my achilles it was 8 weeks and I doubt yours will be less and maybe more. I could walk straight away but did get a bit of physio. Fair bit of muscle wastage too.

I have a different support now, it's a black one with straps. I can't handle the pain from trying to stand, it's agony putting any weight on it. If I'm moved across the bed I have to get the leg lifted very slowly and supported. My legs about 3 times it's size and the pain is awful, really pulling me down. I feel like bawling my eyes out at times. It's much sorer than my knee replacements were.

It's painful just thinking about it.

Living on my own, with the Yorkie & three cats to look after, I'd be absolutely banjaxed if that happened to me.

I hope your recovery goes well & the pain is only short term.

Evening guys, today was horrible, feel sick, dizzy and like I'm going to pass out. I was tested for covid and other infections, seems ok but tomorrow it's scans for blood clots. The Doctors are great but the nurses are real bullies, shoving you to do things before your ready not everyone heals at the same time and not everyone can do what they want when they want.

I can't see anybody being healed in a couple of days and when you get older things do take longer.

It looks like you may not be getting plastered up which if that is the case will spare you crutches which are no fun at all.

Ambulance was just over an hours wait. In the rain too. I was given a padded jacket to put under my shoulder to help with the pain of lying on stone chips. The ambulance boys got me high on gas and air then gave me a heavy dose of painkiller. They had to reset the leg,I that had me screaming and in tears. But they were soooo nice.

Actually it was in Perth it happened, I was at my home. Dageus is living in Dundee with Regan. I'm in the Ninewells Major Trauma Unit.
I was told today my lifestyle will have to change massively, the Doctor really laid it down straight. He nearly had a blue fit when he heard I rode huge Clydesdales and I showed him photos of the places I walk with Dageus. If you had come off that horse you may not have seen a soul you could have died he scolded. He said you may look like a young middle-ager but your not. He said I can't keep living the type of life I wasn't born into. I am to stay in a quiet easier lifestyle more suited to my health and abilities. It's had me in tears all afternoon.

One piece of advice I was given by a doctor whose speciality is older people and ageing: Don't Fall.

Even those like you Raven, extremely active, don't look your age, have less resilience to damage.  Our bones are weaker, our bodies are generally less able to cope with physical trauma.  Falling from height is one of the major reasons for older people needing to go to A&E.  The doctor has a point.

You're doing well, you'll be walking Dageus again, just in different places.   You're getting mobile again, let people look after you til you're well.  Hope they're treating you well in Ninewells.

Morning All, I kind of had a feeling for a while my horse riding days were coming to an end. I have to use steps or a bench to mount and it's quite hard at times, getting off I have to lay forward, over Bonnie's neck take my feet out of the stirrups, swing my right leg over her back and slide to the ground with Dunc holding me all the while. He won't let me go out alone with her, We always go together and sometimes if it's rough ground he puts a lead reign on to her halter. But it hurts to know it's now officially over.
I'm going to be in Perth a lot more in the future, and we have a lot to discuss. It will be weeks before I'm able for short drives and that nearly 6 hour one to Thurso. Is very much a big No No.
Mac the nurses in Ninewells are fine, but run off their feet.
Don't worry Mike, I won't be mounting up again. It's over.

Just an idea, and I know nothing about what I am going to suggest, when Prince Phillip gave up Polo he took up carriage riding, could you not hitch your lovely horses to a small carriage of some type?

Such a shame when we have to take onboard that we are not up to any more what we have always done, old age is cruel.  You take care, you are over the worst and now you need to heal.

Lovely picture of you and your horse.

I forgot to ask, how is everyone else doing that has been ill lately? hope you are getting better.

Jacqueline I know exactly what your talking about, but it's not for me. We both need to have a long talk about the future of the farm, and what we are going to do. Dunc has no children to leave it to so it may get sold, and us decide where we will go. He likes my house but has lived in the back of beyond all his life, he'd simply end up hating it. Besides there's Bonnie n Clyde, his beloved horses he wouldn't leave them. I've seen a difference in him since the lockdown, he now has no employed help, he used to have a fulltime hand and a partime one, but now he's on his on, and he works very long hours.  When I first met him when we were kids, it was his parents who ran the place with 3 employed hands to help, and Dunc after school, weekends and holidays. Very different place. Farming today is not what it was. It's hard for me to try and jump in as if I'd lived that way all my life when my childhood was so very different.

I feel for you Raven, when you have lived your life in a certain way and now you have to think about the fact you are getting past it and have to look to change it and it's not what you would choose to do. Unfortunatly your accident has been your wake up call that you can't go on forever, like my husband heart condition was for us.

We have a buyer for our bungalow, it has a large garden of nearly an acre, we live in rural Wales, although we have a bus it only runs to early evening and not Sundays, Chris is 80 this summer, with his medication he is fine at the moment, but it doesn't say it will always be like this, I don't drive.  He does the garden himself, it's hard work, too much and we need to get nearer to amenities.  My knees are shot, and I have other health issues. We are finding it difficult to find somewhere we like, I know I couldn't live right in the middle of a town with neighbours very close, it would drive me mad.

We viewed a house last Friday, which would be the house of my dreams (or other people nightmares)  it is old, too big for us really (big house but small garden), needs lot of work but is in a wonderful position on the edge of a little town with all we want around us, question is will it kill us to do all the work needed? we have some money to spend but it won't cover all of it so will have to do some ourselves, I don't want to kill my husband! about 25 years ago in our old house, he was under the floorboards putting in central heating pipes two weeks after a Hernia op. he couldn't do things like that now, although he would try and that worries me.  Don't know what to do really, we are waiting for a quote for sorting out the roof/outside it all depends on the price if we can go further or not.

In your case, if your Dunc had to sell up, could you not compromise and get something smaller than the farm in an area not quite so remote that would suit both of you?  less land, but enough for the horses, you couldn't part from them they are lovely,  There must be a halfway solution for you both, there are some nice areas around Perth.

This year my resolution is positive thinking (I am a natural pesimist) we will find a place to go, we will do it!!!! and so will you Raven and Dunc, you know in your hearts, like us,  you have to change your lives, sad as it is.  All the best to you both and what you decide to do.  Jac

Things happen through our lives .. things that we have to adapt to.. The loss of Sam was a big shock.. I was now in control.. Over the years  I learned enough to get by.. But I was young..
As we get older , when changes come along , it always seems harder and having to make  a decision can be scary.. Because we know they will be our final decision...
However many moves and decisions can be good for us..
I wish you well Raven and Jacqueline..

My GP out here actually lives about 2 miles away and is a social friend. He told me to get a very tame little horse to 'plod' not even 'trot' on. His advice influenced my decision when I got 'Dixie' and I'm very careful. I've never even galloped on him. Riding those huge Clydes is very brave and I admire you tremendously for your courage, but you sound a lifetime natural to me anyway.

Sadly physically it all comes to an end. My cricketing pal who leaves Friday for England after six months here was one of the greatest natural talents England ever had as a batsman. When he retired 39 years ago because he dropped a catch in the first county game of the season, I drove him round for 2 hours trying to convince him not to do so.

As he said that day in '84 and I know respect, "I would never have done that even last year, no it's all over and thats that!" He was right all that had really happened was the need for his body to be 25, but he was 36! It just came quicker to him as a natural athlete in a professional sport and truncated career, than to a podgy old bench bound QC' like me!

Anyway hope your feeling better and just to have those beautiful creatures around must be a great joy just to behold? I'm very old but just love sleeping down the 'stables; with mine.

Keep on getting better ...

Thanks Cass, that sounds a wonderful life you've managed to grab, so pleased for you. Dunc is pulling in a pal to see to the horses and another farmers son is coming to run things for a few days.
Dunc will be living in my home and will see me every day he's here, but he can't see Dageus as that will get him all unruffled for Regan and we don't want that. We have been talking on the phone daily and I know he has some ideas he wants to discuss.
Thanks Jacqueline those may be along the lines we have to travel as well.

Cass if you want to know what it's like to ride a Clyde then watch this. You haven't lived untill you've had a good hard gallop along the beach on one.
This is a great video, walk, canter, trot, full out blast and up to their hips in the waves. I could cry just watching it. Turn your sound up and put the video to full screen and just lose yourself in it.

loved that clip - they look just about the right size to have been medieval war horses - why do film makers put men in armour on spindly legged near thoroughbreds? Those in the clip would struggle with a modern man in armour, but men were smaller back then (well, the vast majority were)

Quote from: Michael Rolls on January 11, 2023, 04:56:47 AMloved that clip - they look just about the right size to have been medieval war horses - why do film makers put men in armour on spindly legged near thoroughbreds? Those in the clip would struggle with a modern man in armour, but men were smaller back then (well, the vast majority were)
Mike

Know what you mean, have wondered that myself in the past.
I love that video, Watch it often.

Quote from: Scrumpy on January 11, 2023, 09:47:45 AMWe have to learn to adapt to what life throws at us..
I do feel for Raven & it's made me, & probably other members, think more carefully about what we do.

Although I'm still fully fit & active, I have started to take small steps to ensure, as much as I possibly can, that I don't do anything that could jeopardise it.

A couple of months ago I decided to sort out our intruder alarm's external sounder which had developed a tamper fault that caused it to activate at random times.

It's situated right in the apex of the front wall & needs a three section ladder to reach it, so although I went up & down the ladder like an 18-yr-old, I decided to disable the tamper feature so that I didn't have to go up there again.

It's also wireless & is powered from a socket in the loft, so to eliminate going into the loft if I needed to isolate it due to any other malfunction, I installed an Alexa smart socket which means I can isolate it just by asking Alexa to do it from wherever I am.

Our conservatory roof has just developed a very small leak in heavy rain, a job which normally I'd try to fix, but there is always the risk of slipping, so I'm going to pay a chap I know to fix it.

Stay safe Phil, don't think it can never happen to me, it can and often does. [1080]

Wow, sheer magic and thank you for the post. What wonderful creatures and they look so stable as mounts too, I have learnrt late on in life there's nothing more satisfying and restful than being on Dixie and wandering in the woods and along the lake shoreside (just like the video in fact) on a bright sharp winters day with my three little dogs safely ensconced in their panniers either side of me. All five of us really enjoy it and most days Annie's there too on Fantasy with the young one tethered to her. We sometimes meet up with Rex, who lives next door and whom I've created a 'freeman' to use the woods in pursuit of his passion, birdwatching and he's building a hide near the lake shore. He has some superb cameras and is always keen to share the magnificent pictures he gets. Like me he's a softy for all wild life and I really enjoy his company. He's also a retired court recorder, so we swap yarns and he enjoys the drama and custom of Wigs and garter ridden stories of inter-bench exchanges at the infamous CCC 'The Bailey'.

Thanks Raven, what happened to you has made me accept that although I may scoot about like an 18-yr-old, I'll still fall like a 78-yr-old.

I agree with the comments.. There are things I could do without a second thought.. I now have to double think..
I had my hedges cut down to around 5ft.. I knew last year that it was getting too much for me .. up a ladder.. with an electric hedge trimmer..
I also avoid going out when the pavements are icy..
The problems with the NHS are another reason to 'think twice'..

I'll be rethinking a whole lot of things about my life and habits. Especially the Winter ones, even in the summer I won't be leaving the house with a stick.

Quote from: Raven on January 10, 2023, 08:23:42 PMThanks Cass, that sounds a wonderful life you've managed to grab, so pleased for you.

I've just watched all Jodie's adventures. Lol.   :upvote:

A good point, lying on the ground for an hour with a bust leg, waiting for an ambulance, doesn't appeal to me one little bit.

Also I owe a duty of care to our four furry family members as they're totally dependant on me to look after them.

Thanks Phil, you've put it so succinctly at least here there are two people (Tillie and Bobo) who come in daily. In this way my little family of all sizes would be cared for.

My Cricketer friend has now returned to the UK after a six month stay and I miss his casually sarcastic humour. The dogs keep searching for him, particularly Doris, with whom he's formed a close relationship. He's returning only to close his affairs and then coming back to settle right here. We're going to construct a timber framed annexe in the grounds down by the lake shore for his residence. At 76 and 77, for us its expedient and allows enjoyment of the plot size without sacrificing privacy, whilst retaining the close bond we've held for over 50 years. Following his wife's death he sold his property a year ago at the height and has been privately renting since, whilst he found somewhere else to put down roots. He now appears to have found them, a mere 4,000 miles away! We don't anticipate any problem with his residential status either, even if he doesn't get full citizenship, which my friends with influence assure me he will. Again at our ages it's not really a concern, a lifetime visa is sufficient!

It seems Raven's accident has been a wake up call for a few of us on here, stay safe all, we don't want to lose anyone.

I'll second that.

It always cheers me up read about Cassandra's new life t'other side of the pond.

Raven's accident has made me realise there's no shame in accepting that I can't do today what I could do yesterday.

I actually now celebrate the final state of life. There are so many things to cherish about it after the physical changes are taken into account.

As my friend say, "Do you know one of the great thing about older age - Cardigans!"

Also in this line of thinking I had an email from another old time acquaintance from the legal trade, now resident in Florida. He recanted the UK's political scene with vociferous description, bemoaning how everyone was dropping like flies the other side of the pond and how it wouldn't be long until his turn came along and how he wanted to be buried etc: Then he singed off with an added postscript:

.. "I do miss the Radio Times" ...!

Lady in the next bed to me is reading Harry's book, I asked her if it was any good and she said yes not bad, a bit slow but I'm just getting to the juicy bits. So I left her to enjoy it. 😂
