now MY granny was special, she was a suffragette then they emigrated to Chicago in the roaring twenties and was a flapper, i remember her doing the 'Charleston' [alcohol involved]...
the police warned her about smoking a cigarette in public...lol... she got 'escorted' out of a pub for daring to go up to the bar to buy a drink... one amazing lady...

Being a shortie, I did used to wear long tops as dresses.  I had a trouser suit with a shirt top that came just long enough to get away with.  We were not allowed to wear trousers at work (the women that is before somebody asks) so I would go to work in the suit and take the trousers off during the day and wear the top with my boots.   I loved that suit it was red, my boots were red leather with a buckle on the side, I thought I was the bees knees :yahoo:

crabbyob, your granny sounds an amazing lady, have a picture of her in my head, like the old black and white movies dancing the Charleston in the speakeasy's it must have been during prohibition?  Nosy me, how did she get from Chicago back to the UK?

the depression Jacq, they were on their heels, so her mom sent her boat fare for her and her three daughters, but not hubby, he never did come back, he used to send me four dollars for my birthday £1.oo, loadsamoney, yes she was special, plus she was a chef,...lol... she came out of the pits to go into service with the Duke of Hamilton, yes not a misprint, she worked down the pit as a child, opening airdoors for the ponies.... do you reckon theres a book in there somewhere?

Yes crabbyob there certainly is.

I know you were a miner, but some years ago we went down the Big Pit here in Wales.  The lift scared the hell out of me, the pitch black scared the hell out of me, and when it was explained about the little kids who sat by the air doors with a candle and if it went out they were sitting in the darkness for hours and sometimes they were so hungry they nibbled on their candles I shed a tear, your poor granny doing that,  I would like to get hold of the Coal bosses and tear them limb from limb evil sods.

No wonder when she had a chance she said "sod 'em all" and lived the life she wanted to, and what an interesting life to, good for her.

I probably told this story before but...

My old immediate boss wrote off a Mini car because of a mini skirt. Not his car. He would have been driving a Mk 7 Jag. They had big chrome steel bumpers and used surplus BR track lengths as a chassis. He was driving alog minding his own business when a young mum wearing a mini bent over her pram. The mini in front stopped (whether to admire the view or because of traffic I'm not sure as I don't think he said). He didn't stop. Jag damage none you'd notice. Mini a right off. Dangerous things them minis. Skirts and cars.
