I am of course referring to many supermarkets and stores doing away with the sell by dates and reverting to what our mothers and grand mothers did all those years ago and that was simply to open a jar or tin then smell the ingredients if satisfied they then used it and unless the tin was blown that is a swelling of the tin then the signs were even before the tin was opened that the contents were heading for the bin ,

Never paid much attention to them.
I always looked at sell by dates in the supermarkets and usually took an item from the back, with a longer use by date.
You need to check the date for things like bread or dairy products and dig out the best one. No point buying something that you want to last the week if it's only got 3 days left.
stepdaughter Victoria is a fanatic on sell by dates - had the greatest difficulty trying to get her to accept that something OK at 2359 wouldn't actually be poisonous two minutes later.
Personally, not too bothered by the idea - if something looks and smell OK, I use it - although I came badly unstuck once with some Brie - it looked OK, no mould, no smell (but, to be fair, my sense of smell isn't particularly good) so I ate it - two hours later I was as sick as a dog, so I have been careful around soft cheeses ever since.

I always check the dates on products.. especially meat stuff..
I try to avoid sealed food.. prefer it from the counter..
I toast out of date bread.. I will eat chedder cheese that is out of date.. never soft cheeses..
Crabby put up a great tip some while back.. Once cheese is opened remove it from original wrapping and re-wrap in tinfoil.. It works..
and bananas last longer when not kept on the same stalk..separate them.. It works..

A friend said that cheese is less likely to go moldy if you avoid touching it when you open the packet. I thought moldy has a u in it but I have been corrected!
Not according to the OED - mouldy is the accepted English spelling - may be an Americanism

An American spell checker in use is the obvious reason. It needs the language changing to English GB.
We can set our spell checker to English (US) or English (UK) in account settings in our profiles.
The spell checker was buggy on PF and I'm not sure support was carried through to the current 2.1 release. The required pspell module is active in PHP but there is no option in Posts and Setting to enable a board spell checker which is where the Wiki for earlier releases say it can be set.
There is a profile option to set the default language to English (US) or English (GB) and that should be defaulted to GB - https://letschat.club/index.php?action=profile;area=account It isn't a spell checker though.
I imagine Sheila has a browser based spell checker. I appear to have one active that underlines spelling errors...
