We have become vulnerable where the spread of disease/viruses are concerned..
But so have all countries.. If we are visited by those who have not been vaccinated against these rapidly spreading viruses then we have to take it on the chin..

.. or maybe a tourist brought it back.. !!!

I remember those injections. At least I think I do. There were three of something pink. The pink got darker each one. Quite big too I think. It was pretty much essential then as there were people still getting it. I knew at least two who ended up with leg irons. It's like something from the the distant past. A pity it didn't remain so.

They know it was imported from dna tests or at least a bit I heard on the news said that. Apparently we used to use  live virus vaccines but stopped as it could be dangerous. Third world countries continued with the older vaccines. The strain we have in the wild here now is either a vaccine strain or mutated from it.

Providing updated vaccines for the third world is something our foreign aid should be spent on rather than Rolex watches for African kings or bungs to officials. Stamping these horrible diseases out overseas protects us too.

I seem to recall having a liquid put on a
cube of sugar and being told to eat it.

There aren't any cases in UK yet, but Polio has been in some parts of Africa and in Pakistan for years.....  So, migrants or a Chinese lab ?

That sort came out in 1961 according to this
https://www.chop.edu/centers-programs/vaccine-education-center/vaccine-details/polio-vaccine

Polio vaccine has been available since 1955. The inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) was available first, given as a shot, in 1955. A more convenient form, called oral polio vaccine (OPV), was given as liquid drops via the mouth. It was developed in 1961.

I checked what I heard on the radio as how it was detected here.  It was in sewage sampling.  It is in our sewage so somebody here is crapping it out.

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/poliovirus-detected-in-sewage-from-north-and-east-london

The detection of a VDPV2 (vaccine-derived polio virus type 2) suggests it is likely there has been some spread between closely-linked individuals in North and East London and that they are now shedding the type 2 poliovirus strain in their faeces. The virus has only been detected in sewage samples and no associated cases of paralysis have been reported – but investigations will aim to establish if any community transmission is occurring.

Whether or not there are actually infected or just recently vaccinated I don't know.

I left school in 1954, so could not have been inoculated then according to those dates. Whether I was subsequently, I have no idea.

I remember only too well having the Polio jab aged 5, it was a bloody great syringe.  When I saw it I freaked out and the doctor, my mum and dad had to hold me down to have it and it hurt.  I think I may have had a second one or for something else? as the whole sorry saga was repeated.  I still do not like needles, and have been scraped off the floor a few times after fainting.  I have had lots of blood tests, jabs etc. over the years and I am 100% better so long as I stick my arm out and don't look, still don't like needles though.

That jibes with my recollection. I'm sure it wasn't a teensy little thing like all the injections I've had recently. I'm pretty sure there were three of them but maybe you didn't have them all.
