Title: Invitations
Post by: Michael Rolls on December 17, 2021, 06:37:05 AM
Just spent half an hour checking details of PF members who have posted recently. Only found two offering contact details - Hugh and Scrumpy. Who should offer the invite?

Mike I already asked Hugh through Facebook but not had any answer from him.  :undecided:

I have an idea on this topic. Will add it here once I've checked some stuff.

OK so here is the start.
People are reluctant to put their email addresses in their PF profiles. This means if somebody wants to ask a different member to contact them the rather convoluted way I've seen used is to refer to one of the few here who does have an email contact in their PF profile.

If you check mine https://www.pensionersforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=7216 you will see it is set as [email protected]. That is not a real email inbox. Because I own and control the digitalham.co.uk domain (which in the past was an amateur radio related site) I can set up forwarders to my real email address which anybody who has used [email protected] will have had a reply from.

So...
As you registered here the emails you used are recorded and I can easily set up forwarders to those email addresses which you can use in your PF profiles. If it doesn't work for you then they can be removed from the profiles, I can junk the forwarder and you can either set your filter to bin anything coming from that address or just click it away as spam. Any mail will stop very quickly once the forwarder is removed anyway as they are not cached very long.

It's easier for me to know who has what forwarder if you stick to having if as [your PF userid]@digitalham.co.uk but I can set it as whatever you want.

Anybody willing to use this option please add your name to this thread and I will post to say when it is done.

On the who needs to be contacted and who will do that I'll just say that I am not an overly social PF user. I tend to post more in the events of the day type of thread that the more personal ones. We don't want somebody asking lots of folk to contact them either.

As I set up the PF downtime monitor I can easily add a feature that will collect data on active users. I can then write something to match user names here with there and show a report. Probably directly on this site or certainly via a link to a simple list page.

I'll make a start. It should not take very long with any luck. Once there it's down to volunteers - maybe Sheila has a cousin who lives near Sutton Coldfield and wants to contact Brian to ask about Zumba groups.

I know Alex and Scrumpy were contacted but neither seem to have actually registered yet I think Scrumpy let her email be used. Anybody know why neither registered? Certainly they know the site is here so if disaster strikes they can register easily enough assuming they still can remember where this forum is but by participating even marginally bug and omissions can be noted and fixed while the site is relatively quiet.

What a brilliant idea, I had email forwarders & email auto-answering on my security system websites.

If we all had a [email protected] email address for use on this forum it would mean we wouldn't even need to check profiles or even have it showing on our profile / signature strip, so making it even more secure for us as we'd all know what each members email was.

Please set one up for me.

I have set the forum to allow private messaging so no need for emails in profiles here. It was more for PF itself so folks could think up an excuse to get one of those still unaware that a backup exists to email you without making a real email public. I have put up a sticky that will track active PF users not registered here.

Hi Alex and welcome
This is why I have set up this backup forum..
https://pensioners.digitalham.co.uk/index.php/topic,15.0.html

It is not intended to replace PF is intended to be a means for everybody to stay in contact should the worst come to the worst and Chris just gives up on PF. Or given the number of outages it is getting it becomes unusable.

My hope is that Chris will find some better hosting.

They are all a bit small for my taste and all the official SMF ones are the same but I could easily just replace the images with some a little bigger if I can find some. The ones I have which I paste in on PF are going a bit overboard though. Would you really want
