What's all this starting a sentence with 'So' all about? I notice it on shows like 'the chase' usually when a contestant is asked a couple of introductory questions:
"Where are you from?"
"So originally from x, now i live in y"
"What do you do for a living?"
"So i trained as an x and now work as a y"
"How would you spend your winnings?"
"So, my car is an old x and I'd like a new y"
Just bloody stop it and speak properly.... (or is it just me?)
It has replaced 'basically '..
y'know
In Australia way back they used to end their sentences with the word 'but'..
Whatever
or the ex's favourite...'really'
Ooh I say...

Very irritating and I've said it more than once but it's just part of the modern idiom.." So, how many were there?" "So, 'bout 6."..Makes no sense grammatically but..
Just different filler sounds. No different from well or err or countless others. I bet the young don't even notice them. The reason we do is because they aren't part of our general speech pattern.
the one I can't stand is 'ye know' (pronounced 'ye', not 'you' which is just as bad)

Ooh I know
SO, it irritates me and has done for a long time now. Along with the mis-use of BASICALLY and LITERALLY
Apparently SO is a weasel word that people use to avoid giving a straight answer. funny I haven't noticed the over use of SO during PMQ time.
