The plan is another reported method authorities in the UK are considering to avert the possibility of rolling blackouts this winter, an eventuality described as being a real possibility as a result of energy shortages brought about by European overreliance on Russian gas exports.
According to a report by The Times, the plan proposed by the National Grid would allow households with smart meters to receive payment for dropping their usage during peak times, such as when people often cook, clean and do laundry.
Payments could consist of up to £6 (~$7.40) per kilowatt-hour saved, with one trial run of the scheme seemingly rendering some positive results.

I suspect that the deal may be reducing your usage at the required time this year over what you used last year or something similar rather than just paying low users.

The reason I say that is that the article suggests a payment of £6 per kwh saved and the aim is to reduce the overall usage to avoid cuts so they must be looking at people using less than they normally would.
Anyway if you want to reduce usage you'd need to look more at turning off a 200w TV than 20w of LED lighting.
Must have emanated from Brussels, they set gold standards at edicts like paying farmers to grow nothing etc.

Not at all, we took part in a trial scheme a while ago & we got rebates for the amount of electricty we used in the specific time slots under a certain set kWh level.
Sounds good. Was it at or near the £6 per kWh mentioned?
I would not sit in the dark or cold ... I will use me gas/electricity as I always have..
Can't afford to pay sky high bills.. !! That's alright.. they can cut me off. !! That would make good press.. Prison..!! Bring it on.. Free heating and meals.. and medical check up..
