When my wife and i had just been married , that was 64 years ago ,my mother in law had gone on holiday and so my wife and i lived in her house for the two weeks ,
we had to find some where else to live, and eventually found a two furnished rooms, one a kitchen, the other a bedroom, by the time my mother in law had returned back from holiday, we had moved into our furnished flat ,
on the evening of the first day my wife and i had gone shopping and laden down with all the food we though we needed was fine including a few tins being as then there wasn't a fridge in the flat. so we ate the fresh food and left the tins in a cool place for a later date .
and so there we were as we sat opposite each other when we realised that with all the tins we had for gotten to buy a tin opener. luckily a neighbour lent us one for that night which we replaced with a new one ,

I remember my mate Connie was so excited that she had been given a council flat..
She was living with her mum at the time.. She collected together stuff that was needed.. Her brother gave her a sofa and her mum said she could take the bed ..
Connie was over the moon but the thing that she had forgotten was the removal van..
She was skint.. very skint.. So she asked Eddie (the coalman) if he could help..
He moved her on a Sunday morning when his wagon was empty..
Great memories ...
I remember and was never allowed to forget going to town to pay the electric bill and coming home with some speakers instead...
much better use of money!

The speakers were on sale at what I considered to be a damned good price. No credit cards in those days it would have been real folding stuff.
The young boy who lived next door to me often popped to shop for me when I was busy..
I asked him to get something for me and he came back without it..
He had forgotten what I had asked for and came back with a bottle of Cream Soda.. !!
We had a traditional (old white bloke wearing a khaki smock) corner shop near our first home. My wife used to see our infant school age daughter across the road (not hard there was hardly any traffic) and watch her go to the shop and back on a minor errand. On one occasion she was sent for a lettuce and came back with a cabbage.
during rationing my aunt was sent into town as 'our' grocer had some strawberry jam in, she had to get a one Lb jar of strawberry jam.... my gran asked if she required a note, much to my aunts disgust "certainly not, how can i forget a one pound jar of strawberry jam"
so off she went on the bus... when the conductress asked 'fares please' my aunty held up her three-penny bit and said....lol... "a one pound jar of strawberry jam please"
