The last government left such a mess that it will take years to clear up, if they want to.

looks as though scrapping the 45p tax band is going to be dropped. I suppose in the present climate it was bound to be unpopular, an unpopularity gleefully leapt on by the Left, Truss own critics and Remainers generally

I doubt if the extra 5% makes very much difference to the exchequer or to the people so relieved. But it makes no difference to me either.

It would be preferably in my humble opinion to raise the personal allowance a bit, if the chancellor has money to give away, which he hasn't.

Setting high rates of personal taxation encourages avoidance and evasion. The more money you have the easier it is to do that. Only those on PAYE get caught by these taxes.

Absolutely. At least I can cheer myself up a little bit. The mayor of greater London won't benefit from the tax cut if they don't proceed with it.

His ten deputy mayors wouldn't have benefited at least not on their astronomical salary but maybe on other income.

Very true.  C, M and J have undoubtedly left a mess for Truss to sort out.
I have read several comments (elsewhere) that it is likely that Truss will not receive the support from her colleagues that we would expect and may well be out before the next GE.
I've also read suggestions that JRM could take over and, hopefully, restore some confidence in the party.
I find it difficult to understand why so many of her colleagues are failing to support Truss.  After all, if the Conservatives are out in 2024, many of them will also be out of a job.  Mind you, many of those people in Westminster seem not to be the sharpest tools in the box.

Thank you.  As I said elsewhere (perhaps a different forum!), I have been away at Her Majesty's Pleasure (HM being Marge), namely in Switzerland.

Switzerland ooooh lucky boy !  :upvote:

Skullduggery going on to bring in Sunak as PM but some rules need to be changed.  I guess "they" were pretty sure Sunak would win the contest, he didn't, so it's dummies out and let's do everything we can to overturn the contest result.  Bit like the Brexit result ! Poor Liz.

If I were her I'd spite the bloody lot of them by calling a snap election which is the PMs prerogative. The nuclear option.

Oh not again!  The Conservatives falling out among themselves.
It would teach them a lesson if Labour got in next.  Sadly, though, we'd all suffer.

' A little turbulence '.. !!!!!
It's about time they got their bloody act together.
It seems to me that whoever is voted in the 'others' spend their time trying to get them out..
A bloody shambles...

I don't think there is any if about it. It's a case of when. Some of the problems are not their fault but a lot of them are.

This guy is well qualified to be their next leader...

I don't think I could vote labour. I hope there will be a viable alternative.

I shouldn't really keep saying this, but there is.
I shall be voting for Reform UK (or perhaps a unification with other minority parties), come what may.

Any vote is a wasted vote. They all put bloody politicians in charge.

Well, I suppose we could all agree not to vote at all.
I suppose if nothing else it would send a clear message!

They'll vote for their selves.

Well, if Diane Abbott is in charge of counting, there's every chance that Labour will succeed.
I mean, look at Khan't.  He managed to become mayor by nefarious means.

I reckon the only message from that is "No need to put so much effort into fiddling the postal votes now. Yippeee|"

Postal voting is probably worthy of its own thread, but until we get that sorted out, we are voting against the committee as it were.

So will I, I just couldn't stomach voting for the Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum parties.

Yes, and in addition to that, the Conservatives are more like Liberals now: as much left wing as right wing.
We'll see soon enough what Truss does about it.

I'll likely vote Reform too if they field a candidate here but I'm under no illusion that they'll either win any seats or make any of the others break out in a sweat.

I thought the new Chancellor's 'mini-budget' was very intelligent, which was his problem. The top 1% of highest paid individuals raise 30% of the aggregate personal taxation yield for the Treasury. By reducing the rate, he'd have probably gained a couple of billion, as is now, many canny high raters will likely migrate to either Lichtenstein or Belize, where the deduction is about 2%.  Also those we need here from Frankfurt or Paris will stay where they are.

The Beatles wrote a song about it - 'Taxman'.

"Let me tell you how it will be, there's one for you 19 for me, cos I'm the Taxman and take you for all you got"

In those days there were 20 shillings to the £, so a rate of 95%, which Angela Rayner & Co would consider way too lenient!

Forget envy and semantics and look for the nett gain to the revenue. More will equal less, but of course the socialists, (who know this very well) have enjoyed milking the 'Tax cuts for the rich, Robin Hood in reverse' cliche's and most have fallen for it.

In politics you have to be canny and now was not a time to do this. Too many 'kids' still around in the ranks of the 'Spads' at number 11 probably. The likes of Lawson, or Tebbitt would never have exposed their flank in such a naive way.

But there again of course, they weren't young enough to know everything.
