A letter from Santander this week asking if I still need my bank card to (***) account.
Use your card by April 17th to make sure we renew your card..
I have a couple of accounts with them using this card.. I very seldom go into the bank or use their cashpoint so the accounts are just sitting there.. One account is much larger than the other..
Luckily I opened and read letter which, at first, I thought was junk..
Had I not read the letter the accounts.. after a certain time, dies..
I am sure that many, many people lose monies in this way..

I think , after so many years all monies go to the government.. Could be wrong..
Don't ask me.. I know nuffink..

Never come across that particular demonstration of 'service' yet. I must say I do seethe at the way modern banks carry on

The two things aren't the same.

If you haven't used a card to access the accounts for a period of time the bank will stop sending out cards until you tell them you want one.

It doesn't mean that the accounts will be closed.

I am talking about customers who do not use their cards for years and never think to refresh them..
If this period goes over a certain time are the banks able to say that an account is dead..?

It's if the account hasn't had any activity, not if the card hasn't had any activity.

Activity is any activity, asking for a bank statement would be activity & keep the account open.

It occurs after a set time when the bank has not had any contact with an account holder, normally because the account holder has died or has moved & not informed the bank.

This is what the banking industry says "'Using doesn't necessarily mean making purchases – something as simple as a balance enquiry still counts as activity.

The non-holding of a bank card has no connection whatsoever with accounts being closed & becoming dormant.

In the days when building societies were demulualising and paying a bonus to customers my father took out umpteen building society accounts speculationg on a bonus. On many it paid off. He withdrew all the money from most of them when the demutualisations tapered off but didn't always close them. Some had tiny amounts of interest that was paid in after he had cleaned them out.

I inherited my parents house and chose to move to it as there is no need for a car here with plenty of local shops and a frequent bus service. Hardly a year has passed since he died nearly 20 years ago without a letter turning up about an account with some trifling balance. They don't just close such accounts down and make an attempt to contact the accoint holder eventually.

I too had many accounts in many banks.. I am down to just two now..

You don't even get a card with Lidl. Just a QR code you are supposed to show to a scanner from your phone. I screenshotted mine and printed out 3 on 6x4 photo paper. I'm still using the first. The other two are in reserve. If I can find them. Which is sadly unlikely.

eBay reurns use a huge QR code. I used to print them. Latest return I thought I'd just use the code direct from the phone instead. It worked eventually. I'm sure the queue that formed while they tried to scan it appreciated me trying to save the planet.

I don't do all this scanning and screen shots etc: It all goes over my head..
I just carry a Co-op membership card.. The one I put in a (pay parking) machine at our local hospital.. It took me and another lady to ,eventually , work it out..

I'm fairly sure I've done similar but noticed myself. I've certainly pulled the wrong card plenty of times.
