A truly awful day for Australian cricket. On the same day tat Rod Marsh died, comes the news that  Shane Warne, certainly the greatest leg-spinner of my lifetime, and possible of all time, has died of a suspect heart attack, aged just 52.

suspected heart attack - and only 52. It always seems even worse when someone so talented dies at a young age - in cricket Phil Hughes (only 25) and elsewhere, Karen Carpenter, Alma Coogan, Eva Cassidy, the two All Blacks I mentioned elsewhere - even my own dad at 49

Ah, you haven't caught me with this one as I recognise the name.

Wasn't he done for some dodgy practices in connection with ball tampering or something similar?

I'm sure his name was linked some disrepute.

No, but he was banned for 12 months for using a forbidden recreational drug NOT performance related, but seen as bringing the game into disrepute. The Australian ball tampering was long after Warne had retired

Thanks for the correction.

I'd only heard of him because of the disrepute issue but I couldn't remember exactly what is was for.

My brother in law didn't survive a heart attack in his mid 40s.  Hence so grateful that OH and their younger brother both did!

RIP Shane Warne, I remember his glamorous phase with Liz Hurley.
Its not how old you are, but how you are old. 💖

The old cliche, 'we won't see his like again' - is so very true here. A prodigious wrist spinner with guile and finesse, I could have watched him all day. The greatest of his kind and with a pure action, Muralitharan was certainly aided by a physical deformity. As was Sonny Ramadhin the legendary West Indian who always bowled with buttoned down sleeves, to conceal his double jointed elbow from the batsmen.

Shane Warne, Blonde hair, forearms like Popeye  a huge grin, a charmer, a wizard, a showman armed with a huge personality, who loved bowling 'maidens' over. The perfection of a role converted to an art form. Right there with Australia's greatest competitors, he never knew when he was beaten, with either ball, or bat!

Upstairs now, the almighty can call on him to be at one end with his hero Richie Benaud wheeling in from the other.

Thank you so very much Shane. God blessed you here and will I feel sure look after you hereon.

anyway the poor guy had to fight being over weight all his life, England had just recalled a  batsman after several years, so Shane trying to get under the guys skin grinned at him "hi mate what have you been up to i havent seen you for years" the English batsman smiled back at him"everyone can see what youve been up to Warnie you fat ba'stard"[/i]
